The sun sets Monday night as the last of the eighty-some canoes, who journeyed from as far as Alaska, come to shore on the beach facing Lummi Island, near Bellingham, where they were ceremoniously welcomed one by one by the Lummi Nation, hosts of this year’s canoe journey. Dancing, singing and “potlatching†will follow for the rest of the week until the canoes leave on their return trips Saturday.
