UW at ASU game thread

By Christian Caple — October 17, 2009

WEBER MISSES ANOTHER--From 40 yards this time, wide right. You really have to wonder if he should be playing right now. Huskies take over at their own 22 yard line with 6:56 left.

STILL UGLY--Huskies forced to punt after failing to convert on a 3rd-and-4 from their 44 yard line, then Adam Long gets called for kick-catch interference. ASU will have the ball at its own 40 yard line with a 17-14 lead and 10:51 left to play.

BIG SWING--After the Huskies force their first three-and-out of the night, Johri Fogerson muffs the punt and ASU recovers. They'll have it at the UW 46.

WOW--Great spin off a tackle by Chris Polk, as he was stuffed at the line of scrimmage by Vontaze Burfict before bouncing off and sprinting for a 23-yard touchdown run. 17-14 ASU with 1:18 left in the third quarter.

WEBER MAKES A FG--This one from much closer, a 24-yarder that puts the Sun Devils up 17-7 with 4:45 left in the third quarter. Another bend-but-don't-break series for UW, as AU used a 75-yard carry from freshman running back Cameron Marshall to get deep into UW territory before stalling at the 6 yard line.

WEBER MISSES FG--Yet another pertty solid ASU drive ends in no points, as Thomas Weber badly misses a 41-yard field goal attempt. That's the first missed field goal by a UW opponent this season. Opponents were 17-for-17 on field goal tries entering the game. Weber is usually pretty reliable, but it was questionable whether he'd play today due to a torn ligament in his hip. Maybe he shouldn't have been out there. Still 14-7 ASU with 10:34 left in the third quarter.

30 YARD PENALTY--Late hit penalty on Mason Foster followed by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the UW sideline gives ASU the ball at the UW 20 yard line.

UGLY HALF--Here are the numbers for one of the worst halves of football I've seen this season. ASU has a 228-166 edge in total yards, gaining 155 of that through the air. They've also committed 8 penalties that have cost them 84 yards. Washington's been whistled for 8 penalties, as well, costing them 63 yards. Both teams have turned the ball over inside the 5 yard line, and the Huskies also wasted that last scoring opportunity before the half. Lots of points being left on the field, and a whole lot of undiscipline, sloppy football going on. The officiating has also been pretty sloppy, as they've had to stop play multiple times to fix issues with the clock, and have made some calls that have caused both Dennis Erickson and Steve Sarkisian to go ballistic on the sidelines. The crowd's not happy, either.

ANOTHER EMPTY DRIVE--Huskies take it to the ASU 30 yard line before Erik Folk misses a 48-yard field goal try. He actually made it on the play prior, but ASU had called timeout just before the snap. 14-7 Sun Devils at the half.

HUGE TURNOVER--Kyle Williams makes a catch at about the 10 and had a chance to score, but Mason Foster stripped him at about the 2 yard line and the ball got knocked out of the end zone for a touchback. Washington takes over at its own 20 with 6:08 left in the first half, still trailing 14-7.

WHAT A SERIES--And it ends in zero points for the Huskies, as they watch two personal foul penalties give them huge first downs, one of which came on an interception. And then Locker throws an interception at the two-yard line on the next play anyway.

RAZZLE DAZZLE--Sun Devils take a 14-7 lead on a trick play, as receiver Kyle Williams finds T.J. Simpson from 32 yards out for a touchdown. Nate Williams had it defended pretty well, but never turned around to find the ball and Simpson made a nice catch in the back of the end zone. That was the first play of the second quarter.

OFFENSE STALLING--That's two straight three-and-outs now for the Huskies, their latest drive hurt by a false start and a holding penalty. ASU has it at its own 35 with 1:18 left in the quarter.

TRADING PUNTS--ASU forces a three-and-out, then UW gets the ball back after a sack and a tackle for loss forces an ASU punt.

JOHNSON ON KCIK RETURN TEAM--James Johnson was back deep with Chris Polk onthe last kickoff.

ASU SCORES--Quick drive capped by a one-yard touchdown run from Danny Sullivan. 7-7 now.

QUICK SCORE--Huskies benefit from a late hit on a third down that kept the drive alive, as Jake Locker hits Devin Aguilar on the next play for a 49-yard touchdown pass. 7-0 Huskies early.

94 DEGREES--That's the temperature they just announced in the press box.

We'll start it here. I also wish the game was starting here, but instead, it's going to be about another 10 minutes. Kickoff isn't actually scheduled until about 7:30. Why can't these games just start at 7?

Enough complaining. Looks like Adam Long is going to start over Quinton Richardson at one corner spot, something that had been anticipated most of the week.

Captains are Chris Polk, Jake Locker, Ryan Tolar, Fred Wiggs, Donald Butler and Daniel Te'o-Nesheim.
