UW vs. Arizona game thread

By Christian Caple — October 10, 2009

UW FORCED TO PUNT--With 11:07 left. It's going to take something close to a miracle to pull this one out now.

ANOTHER UA FG--It's still a two-score game, but once again, the Huskies hold inside the red zone and force a field goal. 30-21 Arizona with 13:20 left in the game.

BIG SCORE--How's that for a turnaround? Locker hit Devin Aguilar on the next play from 29 yards out for a touchdown, and it's now 27-21 with 2:04 to play in the third quarter. Big, big score.

UW CATCHES A BREAK--A nice kick return by Chris Polk followed by a personal foul penalty on Arizona gave the Huskies the ball at the Wildcats 39 yard line, then Locker ran for 10 yards and a first down. Good scoring opportunity here.

NOT LOOKING GOOD--Arizona takes a two-score lead as Nick Foles scores on a one-yard run. It's 27-14 Wildcats now with 2:55 to go in the third quarter, and with the way the Huskies offense has looked in this half, that might already be a big enough lead to win. UW really needs to get some kind of rhythm going.

NO OFFENSE--Huskies have -17 yards of total offense in the second half. Arizona takes over at the UW 36 yard line after another 3-and-out and a terrible punt.

BEND, NO BEAK--Huskies continue to play well in the shadow of their own end zone, this time holding Arizona to another field goal after the Wildcats took over at the nine. 20-14 Arizona with 9:31 left in the third quarter.

ILLEGAL KICKING--Mahan bobbles the snap on a punt attempt, then tries to kick it after it bounced on the ground. You can't do that. Arizona takes over at the UW 9 yard line.

ARIZONA TAKES THE LEAD--The Wildcats got good field position after a nice kickoff return, then went 47 yards in seven plays to take a 17-14 lead with 11:49 to go in the half. Nick Foles found David Roberts from nine yards out on third-and-two for the score.

SOME NUMBERS--Arizona's got an even 200 total yards to UW's 171. Huskies have a big edge in rushing yards at 104-40, most of that coming on Locker's touchdown run. Locker's 8-for-12 through the air for 67 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He's got seven carries for 85 yards, by far his highest rushing total this season.

HALFTIME--And it's UW 14, Arizona 10. A couple of great defensive stands by the Huskies with their backs to the goal line are the difference in this one. Also, Christine suffered an injury to his lower right leg. He was taken to the locker room for x-rays.

GREGORY CHRISTINE BEING CARTED OFF--He's been down for a couple minutes now. This doesn't look real good. He waved his arms a couple of times on the way out to pump up the crowd, though.

GOAL LINE STAND--Huskies make another nice stand, this time stuffing Nwoko on a 4th-and-inches to prevent the Wildcats from scoring with 45 seconds left in the half. Still 14-10 Huskies. Huge play.

UW TAKES LEAD--A nice drive by the Huskies, as they go 75 yards in eight plays and cap it with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Devin Aguilar. That's the first touchdown of Aguilar's career. 14-10 Huskies with 6:30 to go in the first half.

WILDCATS ADD FIELD GOAL--But that's a victory for UW, which held nicely and stuffed the Wildcats on three plays from inside the three yard line. 10-7 Arizona with 14:55 to go in the first half. Adam Long took over for Quinton Richardson at cornerback on that last series.

AND THERE GOES LOCKER--He made a great move to avoid a sack on third-and-seven, then decided to just take it 56 yards for a touchdown. 7-7 game with 4:55 to go

BRONSON GETS FIRST CAREER CARRY--A three-yard gain.

NEVER MIND--Pass ruled incomplete. Huskies catch a break and retain possession.

HUSKIES TURN IT OVER AGAIN--And maybe that's why Jordan Polk doesn't get more touches. He caught a ball on a wide receiver screen pass, then promptly fumbled and Arizona recovered. Wildcats ball at the UW 38 with 5:50 to go in the first quarter.

ARIZONA SCORES--Took the Wildcats eight plays to go 67 yards and get on the board first after a UW interception, taking a 7-0 lead on a 12 yard touchdown run by Greg Nwoko. UA got a huge break on a third-down play early in the drive, when the Huskies appeared to have stopped them. But Victor Aiyewa was called for a very questionable late hit that prolonged the drive, and the 'Cats cashed it in.

FELLNER STARTING--Nate Fellner gets the start at safety, becoming the first true freshman to start a game for UW this season.

POLK RETURNS KICKOFF--Chris Polk and Cole Sager were the two deep men for UW on the game's opening kick, the first time we've seen Polk back there this season. He took it 23 yards to the Huskies 35 yard line.

Well, here we are, sitting in the press box about 42 minutes before kickoff of what could be the Huskies most important game this season. There's a huge difference between 3-3 and 2-4, the obvious implication there being that if they win, they're exactly halfway to a bowl game at the season's halfway point.

The safety and receiver positions should be interesting to watch tonight. We were just told D'Andre Goowin isn't in uniform tonight, possibly meaning more playing time for some of UW's younger receivers who haven't been in the mix yet this year--Cody Bruns, Anthony Boyles, Tony Chidiac.

And at safety, Nate Williams is in street clothes tonight as well, meaning a safety tandem of Greg Walker and Victor Aiyewa (though Walker did tweak his knee earlier in the week, but sounds as if it wasn't as serious as they may have thought at first). True freshman Nate Fellner isn't on the depth chart, but it's an almost certainty that he'll get in there before the night's over, as well.

Johri Fogerson, who sat out of practice all week with the flu, isn't in uniform, either. Look for true freshman Demitrius Bronson to get a few carries tonight because of that.

I'll have more once the game starts.
