Day 5 at OKC: Championship series, game 2

By Christian Caple — June 2, 2009

We're about an hour away from the first pitch of the biggest game in the history of Washington softball, as the Huskies have a chance to wrap up the title with a win here today. We had some pretty heavy showers earlier today, but the skies are fairly clear now and the grounds crew is even watering down the infield. Looks for the time being like we're going to start on time, but things can change quickly around here.

Florida is doing somr light jogging/stretching down the right field line right now. They'll be the visiting team today.

Again, this game is going to hinge on whether Stacey Nelson can regroup from another subpar outing yesterday, and if Danielle Lawrie can continue to dominate Florida's offense. She's 2-0 against them this season and hasn't allowed a run, giving up just four hits in 16 innings. So she's not just beating them--she's been pretty much untouchable.

Personally, I expect a little better effort out of the Gators today. They seemed pretty surprised by how poorly they played last night, and the thinking here is that a 63-4 team isn't going to turn in that kind of performance two nights in a row.

Then again, Washington's offense is clicking at a level it hasn't for the entire season. Jenn Salling is finally hitting--she's batting .421 in the World Series after struggling for much of the first month she was on the team. Morgan Stuart is obviously on fire. Niki Williams is killing it. Ashley Charters is doing what she's done all season. So this deep UW lineup that we heard about all season finally seems to be showing why there was so much optimism. They picked the right time to do it. And that's something Heather Tarr has preached all season, even when they were struggling to score runs: peak at the end, not in the middle.

Hard to argue against that now.
