From criminals who turn themselves in, to confused trespassers, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.
Thursday, Feb. 18
An officer observed three individuals with skateboards on the Loew Hall loading dock. One person was carrying a camera, and the other two did tricks, jumping from the loading dock on their boards. The individuals suggested that they were making a video as sponsored skateboarders, and the officer formally forbade them from doing tricks on skateboards throughout the campus.
Friday, Feb. 19
An officer observed an individual walk past the officer’s vehicle and pull a plastic bag from his pocket that contained leafy green vegetable matter. The officer contacted the suspect and asked if he had marijuana in his pocket. The individual handed over the substance and was given a verbal warning for possession of marijuana.
Saturday, Feb. 20
Officers arrived at the Art Building after receiving a report of a person trespassing. The building was closed but had yet to be locked, and authorities observed an individual who had been cited for trespassing at another building previously. The suspect had a sleeping bag, Bible, backpack and several coins spread out on the floor. Officers helped pack up the items and escorted the individual to the main floor. They told the suspect that the building was closed. The man told them that he thought the building was open from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Officers informed him that it was the opposite, and he was trespassed from the premises.
A student reported that her cell phone was stolen from a secured locker at the IMA. She returned to find the locker open and the phone missing from her bag.
A suspect approached a policeman in a patrol vehicle in the 1200 block of 43rd Avenue Northeast and told the officer that there were warrants for his arrest. The information was confirmed, and the suspect was booked into King County Jail.
Monday, Feb. 22
An officer met with a student whose coin purse was stolen from the dining area in McMahon Hall. The victim said that she waited a day after the item went missing before her mother contacted her regarding unauthorized charges on her Husky and debit cards, at which time she contacted the police. Ninety dollars of unauthorized charges were made at the DVD rental kiosk in McMahon, and another $140 was charged to soda machines around the dorm. The victim cancelled the cards and told officers that she was willing to prosecute.
An unknown suspect pulled a telephone box out of a wall in the UW Medical Center surgery pavilion and damaged seven light covers. The estimated damage is $300.
Tuesday, Feb. 23
Roughly five males approached a female student at a bus stop in the 2700 block of Northeast 45th Street near University Village, and one of the suspects took her iPod Touch.
Two unknown male suspects approached a female student in the 4500 block of 15th Avenue Northeast and took an iPhone from her.
Thursday, Feb. 25
According to a press release from UW Medicine News, a child of a patient receiving therapy at the UW Medical Center Roosevelt Clinic sustained a life-threatening injury and was transported to Harborview Medical Center. King 5 News reported that a witness claimed the child was crushed after a hydraulic or adjustable table collapsed on him.
