From stolen knives to martial artists at the medical center, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.

Wednesday, Jan. 6

A resident of Mercer Hall left his door unlocked while he went to shower and returned to find his laptop, wallet, cell phone, Husky Card, iPod and birth certificate missing.

An unknown suspect stole an iPod and a laptop from a room in Mercer Hall. A resident of the room left for class, leaving the door unsecured while her roommate slept. When the victims saw each other later that day, they realized the items had been stolen. Officers did not find any signs of forced entry.

Someone shattered the left rear window of a vehicle parked by the Instructional Center, stealing a bag of groceries and an electric screwdriver from the backseat.

Thursday, Jan. 7

A patient at the UW Medical Center threatened his physician when the doctor attempted to discharge him. The man reportedly took a kung fu stance and advanced, saying, “Come on, I’ll show you.” The patient then left the hospital without further confrontation.

Friday, Jan. 8

A female witness observed that a door in Denny Hall had been smashed with a rock and saw a man running down the hall. Officers conducted an area check but were unable to locate the suspect.

Saturday, Jan. 9

An unknown male suspect entered a boutique in the 5700 block of University Way Northeast with a handgun around 5:40 p.m. The man wore a bandana over his face and demanded the contents of the register. Authorities were not able to locate the suspect after he fled the scene.

A male suspect entered a convenience store at a gas station in the 4300 block of Roosevelt Way Northeast around 5:52 p.m. The man produced a knife and demanded money. The clerk did not comply, and other customers entered the store at that time. The suspect then left the store and fled south with another individual in a blue sedan.

Officers confronted an individual in a handicap-parking spot by McCarty Hall. Police detected the odor of marijuana, and the suspect gave authorities verbal permission to search the vehicle. He claimed that his brother had borrowed the car previously and may have used drugs at that time. Officers found a plastic bag containing 3.22 grams of marijuana and contacted the suspect’s brother to confirm that it belonged to him. The driver admitted that he had been aware that the substance was in the vehicle and was given a verbal warning for possession.

An RA on rounds exited the stairwell to the first floor of Mercer Hall to find an individual holding a glass pipe and a bag of marijuana. The suspect was cooperative and waited for police to arrive. The paraphernalia was confiscated, and the suspect and his friends in the vicinity were issued a warning.

Monday, Jan. 11

A student left his backpack unattended at a table in Odegaard library to use the restroom and returned to find his belongings stolen. The contents included a textbook, pocket tool, and clicker pointer. The student was advised to search local buyback stores for the book and found it in a store on the Ave shortly thereafter. The store told authorities that the book was sold 15 minutes after the theft occurred. The suspect returned to the store in an attempt to sell another stolen book the following day and was arrested.

An unknown suspect broke the front passenger window of a locked vehicle in the W6 parking lot. A backpack with a graphing calculator and assorted papers was stolen for a loss of $166.

Tuesday, Jan. 12

A blue bag containing knives was stolen from a vehicle in the X parking lot. A worker noticed that the right rear window was shattered, and authorities contacted the owner. The estimated loss is $500.

And what have we learned? "Student left dorm room door unlocked...", Student left laptop and backpack unattended in the library....". It's a campus in the middle of a city!

When I lived in the dorms back in the 1960s, we knew better than to leave a room door unlocked.
