Pac-10 power rankings

1. Oregon: As crazy as this seems after what happened in their opener, the Ducks deserve the top spot in the first edition of these rankings. They absolutely dismantled a Cal team that many thought would compete for the Pac-10 title, and their offense appears to be in gear.

2. USC: There’s some work to do for the Trojans still, and their offense obviously isn’t what it used to be. But, with a defense like that, it’s going to be tough to beat these guys. Big game at Cal this week.

3. Stanford: Well, Husky fans got a real good look at what a powerful running attack looks like. If Toby Gerhart can stay healthy amid all the contact he forces, the Cardinal is going to be as tough to stop as anybody in the conference. They look bowl-bound.

4. Arizona: All of a sudden, the Wildcats look like a bowl team, too. A nice shootout win in Corvallis will be a huge confidence boost for a team still trying to carve itself a spot in the conference’s upper half.

5. UCLA: The only undefeated team in the conference, but all three wins have come against teams that aren’t that great this year, Tennessee included. Let’s see how backup quarterback Kevin Craft does against Stanford this week.

6. California: Wow. Nobody saw that 42-3 butt-kicking against Oregon coming, but that’s been the epitome of Pac-10 football recently. Big, big bounce-back game for the Bears this week against USC. They could really start reeling if they can’t find a way to win this one.

7. Arizona State: Tough loss to Georgia, but the Sun Devils showed some fight. The next three are pretty winnable: Oregon State at home, at WSU and Washington at home.

8. Washington: The Stanford loss was just about the most disappointing outcome possible following the upset over USC. That run defense looks … well, like it did last year. Steve Sarkisian needs to find a way to reverse that, in a hurry.

9. Oregon State: Beavers aren’t going to have a real fun year if they can’t beat teams like Arizona at home.

10. Washington State: Bad.
