Campus Crime Blotter: Punched locks, brush fires and indecent exposure

From criminal trespass to broken windows, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.

Monday, July 27

The window of a shoe repair shop room in Hutchinson Hall was broken at an estimated damage of $100. Nothing appeared to be taken from the premises.

Wednesday, July 29

Officers confronted an individual camping in a cardboard box at the loading dock of Condon Hall to find that the trespasser had a misdemeanor warrant. They proceeded to arrest the suspect and booked him into King County Jail.

The Seattle Fire Department responded to a brush fire in the Union Bay Natural Area. The blaze was extinguished, and authorities found a Roman candle firework at the scene. It was not determined if the explosive was related to the incident. Roughly two acres of the region were burnt in the fire.

A man exposed himself to a woman walking by the Hughes Penthouse Theatre on campus and attempted to grab her multiple times before she quickly left the area. The suspect did not initially appear threatening to the victim and was not apprehended by authorities.

Sunday, Aug. 2

Various electronic devices from vehicles in the E1 parking lot were stolen, and the locks on multiple vehicles were punched and removed with what appeared to be a professional tool. No suspects have been identified.

An officer directed two trespassers in the Applied Physics Laboratory storage area to the ground at gunpoint until back up arrived. No items were stolen, and one suspect apologized and said that she was not aware she had done anything wrong. Both individuals were issued citations for criminal trespass.

The UW Police Department provides the information for this column.
