From vehicle trespassing to stolen bicycles, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.
Monday, July 13
A suspect snatched the purse of a woman walking by Chipotle on the Ave and fled south. After the victim chased the man and yelled for help, roughly eight people dashed after the perpetrator. One of the chasers fell to the ground and sustained injuries as he grabbed the suspect’s shirt. Officers arrived to find roughly four people still chasing the suspect near the central parking garage. The victim’s purse was returned with her social-security card missing.
Thursday, July 16
Officers received a report of a stolen bike at the UW Technology Building. The victim left his bike unattended for about three hours and returned to find both his bike and cable lock stolen for a loss of $720.
Friday, July 17
An assault occurred around 10:30 p.m. outside Allen Library when two males approached the victim and one punched him, causing the individual to bleed from his chin. The victim told officers that he did not know the suspects prior to the incident and positively identified the individual who hit him. Both suspects were juveniles and were released to their parents.
Saturday, July 18
Authorities responded to a report of an unknown suspect sleeping in a van in the S1 parking lot. The owner did not find anything missing or damaged in the vehicle, and the suspect was arrested and released on investigation.
A resident of Blakely Village returned to her apartment around 8:30 p.m. to find her purse and other items scattered around the home. Other items, including a laptop and PlayStation, were missing at an estimated loss of $7,480. The victim noted that she misplaced her keys several days earlier, and the locks to the residence were later changed.
Sunday, July 19
A Stevens Court resident awoke to find a transient standing and muttering near his bed. The victim heard the suspect muttering “I’m going to kill you,” and shooed the man from the room. He enlisted the aid of his roommate to remove the individual from the apartment and later found that the suspect had stolen his debit card.
