You can never try too much, and you can never learn enough.
In my four years of university experience, I have learned that options for the future have been unlimited. Therefore, my first statement, “you can never try too much,” pertains to all the experiences and options that are going to be at your fingertips.
Everyone I knew walked into the dorms as a freshmen with either the intention of being a business or engineering major. Now that we’re all graduating — or graduated — very few of us actually stuck with our original goals.
By taking random lower-level classes, a lot of people discovered the university’s small and quirky departments that were unheard of a few years ago because new departments and majors spring up all the time to suit the needs of new job markets. Not only are these departments anticipating the demands of the job markets, but they’re small so you will know the name of everyone in your major and basically be guaranteed a spot in all your required classes. Most of all, you can impress pretty much anyone just by naming your lesser-known major.
Some people discovered their passion in things that can’t be learned in a university setting but are part of life’s experiences. A lot of people discovered their ability to shotgun a beer. However, some have learned to cook their way onto national TV, and others trained hours outside of their time in class to win break-dancing competitions.
My point is that being in a four-year university teaches you a lot. Being away from your parents and anyone else who is willing to hold you hand can teach you a lot. You will discover a lot about yourself and a lot about what you’re capable of.
Never be afraid to try anything.
Kiss a few strangers, try some new foods, watch a movie that’s outside of your taste zone and worship a new religion for a while.
There’s no harm in trying it all because you will only remember it once. You never know what you might like, and, if anything, you’ll be more enlightened than before.
Secondly, you can never learn enough.
People who think they know it all are jerks, anyway. We are young and, chances are, there is a lot of advice out there that is going to make our lives a little easier or our skills more refined. The world is always changing, and new things are constantly being discovered. We can never learn enough, and we can never know it all, so never stop learning and never stop discovering. These college years will teach you how to discover and create, but that doesn’t mean the rest of your life can’t be as exciting as well.
