With the final collegiate meet of the year looming in six days, there is no better time for the Huskies to enter the NCAA championships with momentum on their side.
Three Huskies won their events at the West Regional championships last weekend, so it’s hard to say which Dawg has the most momentum going into nationals.
Perhaps it is pole vaulter Scott Roth, who’s won two straight meets in a row, becoming the second Husky male to win the pole vault at the Pac-10 championships.
Fellow pole vaulter Jared O’Connor knows all about momentum heading into the national meet. He rode a win in regionals to second place at nationals last season and made nationals again this year.
In the distances, steeplechaser Mel Lawrence figures to be carrying a lot of momentum after dominating her past two meets.
None of her competitors have come close to matching her speed in her only three college runs, and she’s improved upon her time with every race.
Nevertheless, she comes into nationals ranked fourth.
Lawrence is joined by four other teammates from the UW’s national title-winning women’s cross country team: Katie Follett, Anita Campbell, Kailey Campbell and Christine Babcock, running in various distance events.
The men’s national-qualifying distance crew is comprised of senior All-American Austin Abbott and Jake Schmitt in the 1,500 and the 10,000, respectively.
Another senior All-American, sprinter Jordan Boase, will be taking his final shot at the national title. After winning the Pac-10s and regionals in the 400, he figures to bring momentum, as well.
Although he tweaked a hamstring in Pac-10’s, Boase’s win at regionals may have quashed fears of him being hampered by injuries.
Boase, ranked 10th in the 400, will also be joined by Jeff Gudaitis at nationals.
“From being an alternate last year at NCAAs to [being] in two events, it’s really exciting,” Gudaitis said to gohuskies.com.
Gudaitis is also running in the men’s 4x100-meter relay team, which will be making a surprising trip to nationals as well.
Despite the absence of Boase, as well as two other legs from last season’s national-qualifying team, the men’s 4x100 team of Gudaitis, Kenjamine Jackson, Randy Bacon and Joe Turner placed third at regionals, guaranteeing them an automatic spot at nationals.
“I’m pumped,” Bacon said to gohuskies.com after regionals. “Finally, three years on the [4x100], I make it to NCAAs and get to run.”
Finally, despite being ranked 21st in the hammer throw, Zack Midles will head into nationals with the most recent burst of momentum, qualifying for the NCAA championships with his final throw at regionals.
“I’m going to NCAAs, which is so awesome,” Midles said to gohuskies.com. “I missed it last year by one spot, so I was able to fix some things this year and work on my form and was able to get one out there on my last throw.”
Other Husky qualifiers are throwers Kyle Nielsen, Elisa Bryant and Brooke Pighin, pole vaulter Andrea Peterson and decathlete Jeremy Taiwo.
