After 17 years as the head coach for Husky baseball, Ken Knutson learned Monday that his last day with the organization will be June 30.
When asked when the UW administration first approached him about being replaced, Knutson said, “this morning.”
Knutson agreed that there was very little warning, and had not anticipated it beforehand.
Despite this, he said his dismissal was a joint decision.
“After conversation it was basically a mutual agreement,” he said. “[The conversation] was pretty brief but it was obvious that there was a disconnect between me and the administration.”
Knutson has spent a total of 27 years with Husky baseball as a player, assistant and head coach.
“I’m proud of everything the UW baseball program has accomplished during my years here,” Knutson said in a statement released on gohuskies.com. “I have met some really awesome people and coached so many great players over the years. That’s what I’ll miss the most, for sure.”
During his coaching time with Husky baseball, he has accumulated the most wins in the school’s history and was named Pac-10 North Division Coach of the Year three times. He has led the team to two Pac-10 titles, four division championships and six appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
However, last season UW finished 25-30 overall and 13-14 in the Pac-10, ending the season on a five-game losing streak.
Knutson’s last day will be June 30, five weeks after the season’s end. He said he will take this as an opportunity to focus on family and his private business.
“I have an indoor practice facility and I’ll be paying attention to that,” he said.
