Campus crime blotters: Stolen diamonds, marijuana and tree climbers


From credit-card fraud to confiscated pipes, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.

Thursday, April 30

Roller blades, a diamond ring and a rack with a bicycle were stolen from a vehicle in the triangle parking garage. There was no sign of forced entry, and the estimated loss is $1,400.

A laptop computer was stolen from the Electrical Engineering Building after the owner placed the device in her bag during class and found that it was missing as she was about to leave.

Saturday, May 2

An RA in McCarty Hall contacted authorities after a balcony wall was vandalized with a painted swastika. The damage is estimated to be $50.

During a party check at Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, officers found a suspect lighting a marijuana pipe in front of the house. The pipe and substance were confiscated for destruction, and the individual was given a warning.

Police responded to a disturbance near McMahon Hall when four intoxicated males were climbing trees and hitting things with broken branches.

Sunday, May 3

A resident in Terry Hall lost $2,700 after she left her belongings in a study area while she went to check her laundry. The suspect used her credit-card information to purchase a laptop computer.

Monday, May 4

Officers responded to a complaint that the smell of marijuana was coming from a room in Terry Hall. Authorities did not find the substance upon arriving at the residence but confiscated a glass bong for destruction.

“The residence halls can take action based on your contract with them,” said UWPD Assistant Chief Ray Wittmier regarding offenses that occur in the dorms. “That doesn’t preclude a criminal charge that is handled by the King County District Court.”

Tuesday, May 5

Roughly 500 milliliters of acetic anhydride was spilled in a room on the sixth floor of the I-wing of the Health Sciences Building. One person was treated for minor exposure to the vapors on the scene, and the room was cleaned and secured.
