1. Arizona State: A minor hiccup against Oregon State in which the Sun Devils lost two of three means they are now three games up on second-place UCLA. Still, the Devils are 16-5. I wouldn’t be complaining too much if I were them.
2. UCLA: Things appear to be coming together for the Bruins, who have now won seven of their last nine Pac-10 games. They get two completely different teams for their last two conference series against California and ASU.
3. Oregon State: Taking two of three from Arizona State is a major accomplishment in the 2009 version of Pac-10 baseball. The Beavers did just that last weekend, and they will face off against Washington in what will likely be the series that boosts them into postseason play,
4. Washington: Maybe I’m a bit of a homer, but when it comes to ranking the three-through-seven spots in the Pac-10, it’s really a toss-up. The Huskies have played like maniacs the last two series, but if they want to get into the NCAA tournament, they have to continue to win. A series loss to Oregon State this weekend would pretty much crush any hopes.
5. Washington State: David Stilley was the victim of poor run support in the Cougars’ second loss to Stanford. But everything about this team just seems so average; average offense, average pitching. Sprinkle in a little good luck, and you have an 11-7 conference record.
6. Stanford: This is a hard team to read. One week, the Cardinal looks like the perennial title contender it used to be. The next, it looks like Oregon. Overrated? They have two more Pac-10 series to answer that question.
7. USC: Getting swept on the road is a definite momentum crusher, so it’s no surprise that after their 3-2 loss Sunday to Washington, the Trojans gathered around head coach Chad Kreuter on the Husky Ballpark outfield grass and had a long discussion. My guess is they went through step-by-step exactly how they lost to the seemingly mediocre Huskies.
8. Arizona: The Wildcats are lucky California is terrible. The ’Cats swept away the Bears in pretty convincing fashion, and Bobby Coyle had a memorable weekend, smacking around Cal’s pitchers by going 7-for-13 with nine RBI.
9. Oregon: Despite having the worst conference record, the Ducks managed to steal a game from the Cardinal last weekend, proving that even the worst can compete in this league. They haven’t given up in their first season back.
10. California: The Bears look like a team that has simply stopped caring. For a team that had high hopes entering the season, they have to be considered the biggest disappointment. They have now been swept by Pac-10 opposition for the third time this season after falling to Arizona, and they have lost 12 of their last 15.
