From wandering patients to lost, found and stolen jackets, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written on specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.
Friday, May 19
A security guard at the UW Medical Center found a plastic bag with marijuana, methamphetamine residue and several pipes in a smoking area at the hospital. Police collected the evidence for destruction. There are no suspects at this time.
A student found a jacket and pencil pouch in the Communications Building and turned the items into the front desk at the HUB. As the attendant turned away to log the belongings into the lost and found, the jacket was stolen from the counter.
Sunday, May 21
A backpack and iPod were reported stolen from Haggett Hall for a total loss of almost $150.
Monday, May 22
Police found a patient that walked away from the hospital near Rainier Vista. The woman was later transported back to the medical center.
Officers responded to a woman who was causing a disturbance at Gerberding Hall. After she ran away, police found her at the Ocean Sciences Building and asked if she needed help. American Medical Response transported her back to the hospital.
Authorities received a report that fraudulent charges were made to a Husky Card after the victim had lost it.
“To avoid becoming a victim of identity theft, you need to report it as soon as you are aware of losing the item,” said Arnie Belton, a UW Police Department (UWPD) crime prevention officer. “You want to contact the police immediately to file a report to present to the creditor.”
Officers received a complaint about a man sleeping in the loading dock area of Schmitz Hall. Authorities contacted the suspect and arrested him on an outstanding warrant.
Tuesday, May 23
A suspect broke into two vehicles in the H17/H18 parking lot, shattering a passenger window. Someone also shattered the window of a car in the Stevens Court garage.
Thursday, May 25
Authorities responded to an incident in the H17/H18 parking lot where a printer, a guitar and personal documents were stolen from a car. Officers did not find any visible damage to the vehicle.
Police responded to the Health Sciences Building when a personal laptop was stolen from a lab in the complex.
