With the ASUW board of directors elections over, and the hiring process for jobs within ASUW entities still in progress, the association continued its transition period into next year with another round of elections last night.

One of ASUW’s most public branches, the ASUW Senate, had its own makeover with elections for officers.
Each week, the ASUW Senate gathers on the third floor of the HUB to discuss campus happenings, hold forums and vote on legislation that represent the views of students on campus. This differs from the board of directors, which acts more as an executive body.
The officer positions, including chair, vice chair and membership coordinator, were voted on by senators present at last night’s senate meeting.
This year, the fourth officer position, the senate secretary — which will now be known as senate clerk — will be filled through hiring rather than election.
Jon Solomon, this year’s senate chair, regards the decision to make senate clerk a hired position as an acknowledgement of its lack of politicization. Alternatively, the position of chair can play an influence when it comes to being a tie-breaking voter, and vice chair serves as a liaison to the ASUW board of directors.
Candidates for the remaining three positions were nominated by senate attendees last week, although an additional nomination period was available for each position before voting last night.
“I think the teamwork of the four officers is important for keeping everything together,” Solomon said.
Solomon’s position consists of facilitating all the meetings, as well as being the primary senate representative to entities outside the ASUW.
Each candidate had a 30-second opening speech period, followed by questions from the current officers and other senators and finished with a 30-second closing period.
An abbreviated process also followed with elections for the committee-head positions, which in previous years were conducted at the beginning of fall quarter rather than the end of spring.
The position of senate chair went to Jed Bradley, senator for the group Young Democrats at UW, who ended up winning over Drew Blincow, current senate membership coordinator.
“My goals are to make senate more relevant and create involvement for every sector of the UW community,” Bradley said. “I think that senate officers play an important role in recruiting, as well as guiding people and helping them be effective senators.”
Bradley will be working alongside Sarah Round and Bryan Dosono, who will be serving as vice chair and membership coordinator, respectively.
“I feel excited for next year,” Bradley said. “I think that the senate has a lot of potential.”
The final ASUW Senate meeting of the year will take place at 5 p.m. next Tuesday in the HUB.

Is it really appropriate to show photos and comments made by people during the 5 minute discussion period afterwords?
