CROATIA — Bakers in Split, Croatia, have discovered a new way to deter potential burglars.
After being broken into on a nearly weekly basis, the bakery displayed a poster of Chuck Norris with the caption: “This shop is under the protection of Chuck Norris.”
Since the sign was added to the shop a month ago, there have been no burglaries.
Chuck Norris himself posted on his Web site that he is glad to provide a service to the bakery, however remote, and that he may visit in the future to help reinforce the message that theft is never welcome.
UTAH — Fin Keheler, 11, from Sandy, Utah, is attempting to claim the Guinness World Record for most snails on the face for 10 seconds.
According to the Guinness Web site, the record is eight, though Keheler’s research indicated that it is actually 36.
After friends and neighbors gathered snails from their yards, Keheler made three attempts Saturday to break the record, eventually reaching 43 snails.
His family is sending witness statements, video and media coverage to Guinness World Records to verify his success.
BATH, England — Jane Eyre was attacked by a deer while baking shortbread last week. Eyre, 87, who shares her name with a popular Charlotte Brontë novel, was in her kitchen when a deer leapt into and broke the front window of her house. Panicked, the deer ran through the house in an attempt to escape, causing minor damage and remaining for the most part unhurt, though blood splatter was found from cuts sustained, presumably, from the window entry.
Eyre is left to question from where the deer came, as she lives in a cul-de-sac, and her house is set against a large wall.
She also reported that the insurance company’s reaction upon hearing the story was, “Oh dear” — a statement that was quickly retracted given the unintentional pun.
NEW YORK — A baseball fan had to be extricated from a toilet after losing a gold tooth during a Mets game.
The unnamed woman was in the restroom when the tooth fell out and into the toilet. As she attempted to retrieve it, her arm became wedged in the bowl. Though it is unclear how long she was trapped, security eventually responded to her screaming.
Emergency services were unable to free her until a plumber was called to the scene, and by that time, a crowd of spectators had gathered to witness the plight.
The tooth was never recovered.
AUSTRALIA — A surfer saved a kangaroo from drowning recently after the marsupial bounded into the ocean.
Neil McCallum watched as the kangaroo bounded down the beach and into the surf, but became concerned when it started to struggle in the strong tide. McCallum was also worried about the kangaroo getting eaten by hammerhead sharks, so he struggled to drag it onto his surf board, then brought it back to dry land.
After McCallum brought the kangaroo to the beach, the animal took several minutes to recover before fleeing.
It is unclear why the kangaroo entered the ocean in the first place.
