Fashion forward: All the foreign influence you could ever want

Hello again, ladies. Hopefully, now that the weather has become a bit nicer, you have been following some of my fashion tips from the previous editions and weren’t caught unprepared. If the last column wasn’t enough, I came up with even more fashion tips to make your wardrobe look the best for the summer. This season’s staples are full of foreign influences, color — or lack thereof — and all the accessories you’d ever want.

Some of the biggest trends strutting down the runway are the African and Indian influences. These regions’ designers have featured intricate and bright apparel with stunning detail for decades, and the Western European designers finally caught wind of it, added a little high-fashion flair, threw it on a 6-foot, 90-pound model and tossed her down the flashy aisle. Pieces include strappy sandals loaded with colorful beads, dyed leathers, and dark metallic undertones like gold and pewter. Flats work well, but wedges give your look an Americana appeal as well. Just don’t do cork; it looks cheap and gets dirty really easily. However, if you must do cork, get a wedge that’s dyed really dark; it doesn’t look as trashy and blends in with stains.

Flowing Indian- and African-influenced dresses are also becoming a big hit. Tube tops with an empire waist that flow to the ankles are the shapes to aim for. Look for ones with bold prints and lots of color that make a “wow” statement, but don’t go too bright; earthy and toned-down hues are more accepted and won’t make you look like a child of the future.

For accessories, overdoing it is the way to be. Load up your wrists and neck with bangles, bracelets and necklaces that have large, dark stones. If anything, it’ll make your frame look smaller. But don’t go too far: Don’t over-accessorize with a bold dress or top. If you decide to bangle-up, go for a neutral or solid top and shorts, but it’s perfectly acceptable to match it with outlandish sandals.

Also, go naked — not literally. We know springtime is the occasion for bright colors that you wouldn’t normally wear during the fall and winter months, but something that designers have been leaning toward this summer season are nudes and neutrals. Beiges, blushes and skin tones for basics like dresses and tees are summing up the majority of the colors being used at stores. What’s a girl to do? The nice thing about this trend is that you can accessorize easily with shoes and bangles, as I mentioned earlier.

Another thing designers are aiming for with this new turn of shades is the hope that these clothes might be worn through into the pre-fall and cold months. In this economic time, people can’t afford new outfits every season, so malleability and transition pieces are key.
