While most UW students are itching to pass final exams and put as much distance as possible between themselves, classrooms and libraries, many will be tied to campus this summer fulfilling credits, scoring internships and logging work hours. However, with school-year leases ending in June, it’s not always easy to find a place to crash for just three months. Luckily, Housing and Food Services (HFS) representatives, fraternities and fellow Huskies are helping accommodate the housing crunch.
During summer quarter, rooms in Terry Hall and three buildings in Stevens Court can be rented for $480 per term, plus possible food and Husky card expenses. While Stevens Court residents will not have a dining plan, purchasing dining accounts is mandatory for those staying in Terry Hall.
“There are two groups of students who are eligible for summer housing: current residence-hall residents who also have applied for autumn quarter housing or UW students who are registered for summer classes,” wrote Erin Birkenkopf, HFS Student Services supervisor in an e-mail. “The only students who are eligible to stay without taking classes are the current residents who also have applied for autumn housing.”
The deadline for first-priority housing was May 1, but deposits for A-term are not due until June 1. RAs will be assigned to each building.
“We anticipate having housing for all students who apply for summer housing,” said Birkenkopf. “We expect that most current residents who applied by May 1 will be housed in Stevens Court, and that the others will be assigned to Terry Hall.”
Most fraternities are also opening their doors, but only to female students. At Zeta Psi, young women can move in for $400 and will get deductions off their bill if they help out with rush events. Though cooks won’t come during summer months, the kitchen will be open. Women are assigned to single-sex double or triple rooms and can take over one of the frat’s three bathrooms.
“There’s no mandatory activities,” said Shiva Das, Zeta Psi recruitment chair, “but it’s such a good deal on a whole summer’s rent that the girls are kind of expected to help out.”
Zeta Psi’s deadline for summer applications has passed, but they usually admit about 35 women. Students who are interested in Greek housing this year should talk to recruitment chairs as soon as possible.
Some apartments and houses in the U-District do have three-month leases, but often subletting a room is a simpler alternative. This time of year Craigslist and newspaper classifieds are full of roommate-wanted listings, and the advertised rooms are often furnished and don’t require a formal lease.
Junior Susie Coffaro is renting out her room on 20th Avenue Northeast this summer while she studies abroad.
“I haven’t found anyone to take my room yet, but I still have about a month to look,” Coffaro said. “I plan on checking with friends and friends of friends first. If I can’t find anyone that I know, then I will post on Craigslist. I know it takes a bit of time to find someone to sublet, and I’ve never done it before so I’m still not sure how easy it will be. I’ve always found Craigslist to come through in a pinch, though.”
