Campus crime blotter: Car prowls, harassment and makeshift shelters

From stalking to vandalized vehicles, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.

Monday, March 30

A driver’s side window of a vehicle was smashed in the S1 parking lot. An iPod and Bluetooth unit were taken during the incident, amounting to $300 in damage and loss.

Later that day, a napping student in Odegaard Undergraduate Library awoke to find personal belongings were missing. The stolen bag and contents amount to $165 of stolen property.

Thursday, April 2

The owner of a vehicle in the triangle parking garage returned to find the passenger door of the car open. The automobile’s CD player, several discs and work tools were taken from the car. The stolen property amounted to $500.

Later the same day, a woman spending the night in a UWMC waiting room left the area and returned to find that her wallet was missing. The estimated loss is $1,125. A search of the area yielded no results.

At the X parking lot, an estimated $1,940 in snowboarding gear was stolen from a parked automobile. The vehicle was found with the hatchback open. The owner did not recall whether the vehicle had been secured. The lot where it was parked is not monitored with security cameras.

The same day, police responded to a call that a member of the Grupo Corpo dance group from Brazil had personal items stolen from a dressing room in Meany Hall. The theft, amounting to $1,905, occurred while the group was practicing for a performance.

While the aforementioned robberies were taking place around campus, a female student notified police that she was being stalked. Written communication from the suspect notified the victim that she was being observed and followed and that the behavior would continue. The case is still being investigated.

Saturday, April 4

A suspect was escorted from a campus residence hall after officers responded to a call from a student who felt threatened by a significant other. The suspect was confronted by officers outside the victim’s room and given a formal trespass warning.

Around midnight, three high-school girls approached a female at the entrance to her apartment on the 4500 block of 16th Avenue Northeast. The trio asked for bus fare and requested to use the girl’s cell phone. One of the suspects then grabbed the victim’s purse as she reached for her wallet, and the group fled the scene.

Shortly thereafter, a similar incident occurred at Cowen Place Northeast and Northeast Ravenna Boulevard. The suspects did not manage to steal any items from the individual, but the victim sustained a laceration to the head.

Sunday, April 5

Authorities discovered an unsecured building by the E10 parking lot that was apparently being used as a camp or shelter. Graffiti and debris were found inside the establishment, and multiple doors on the building did not have handles or locks. Police secured the building and estimated the damage to be $200.

The UWPD and the Seattle Police Department’s online blotter provide the information for this column. The online blotter provides a sampling of the hundreds of incidents the SPD responds to each day.
