Golf

After an impressive win at the Oregon Invitational March 24, the No. 9 men’s golf team will face its toughest competition this Sunday at the United States Collegiate.

Nick Taylor, fresh off his third medalist honor of the season at the Oregon Invitational, is ranked No. 23 in the nation and is just one medalist honor away from tying Brock Mackenzie for the most all-time wins.

Nine of Golfweek’s top ten teams in the nation will be competing with the Huskies this weekend. The UW will bring with it the same line-up that won the Oregon Invitational.

The women’s golf team will travel to Florida for the Lady Gator Invitational, which begins Monday at the Mark Bostic Golf Course.

The Dawgs placed fourth in their last two tournaments. Sophomore Anya Alvarez has led the Huskies, finishing third at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational and 11th at the BYU Dixie Classic. She has three top-10 finishes in six tournaments this season.

Gymnastics

The UW gymnastics team will enjoy a home-court advantage this Saturday as some of the top gymnasts in the country visit Seattle at the NCAA West Regional.

On March 21, the Huskies earned a 194.375 at the Pac-10 championships and finished in fourth place, their best finish since 2003. Freshman Amanda Cline led the Dawgs and was the top all-arounder, finishing sixth overall.

Six Dawgs were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic team, including three first-team selections. Three Huskies, senior Ashley Houghting, sophomore Samantha Walior and freshman Hatsune Akaogi, were also named to the Pac-10 All-Conference teams.

Track

After last week’s success in the Stanford Invitational in which the Husky track team qualified 19 of its members to the NCAA regional meet, the Dawgs will look to send more athletes to regionals in Saturday’s Jim Click Shootout, hosted by the University of Arizona.

While the Stanford Invite was a success for the Huskies’ distance teams, the focus for the UW in Tucson will be on sprinters, jumpers and throwers, as most of the distance runners take a break this weekend.

Leading the way for Washington is senior sprinter Jordan Boase, who ran in the Husky men’s 4x100 meter relay, which won its event at Stanford.

In the field events, the Huskies could score big with good performances from their five pole vaulters who each qualified for regionals at Stanford. Sophomore pole vaulter Scott Roth currently leads the nation in highest outdoor vault.
