1. Arizona State: The Sun Devils had a rough weekend against Cal, but a rough weekend for them is like getting served a delicious cake and getting chocolate frosting all over your face. It was messy, but they took two of three games from the Bears to run their conference record up to 15-3. Impressive.
2. UCLA: The Bruins don’t have anybody that really stands out except pitching sensation Trevor Bauer, but they’ve now won five of their last six Pac-10 games, including two at home against Oregon State.
3. Oregon State: The Beavers had tough losses in Los Angeles, but the real test to see if they are back at their 2005-2006 level comes this weekend when they play ASU at home.
4. Washington State: I guess the Cougars are for real. They smacked USC’s pitching around in the second and third games of their weekend set, and with upcoming series against conference bottom-feeders Stanford, Oregon and Washington on the horizon, they could easily get an NCAA tournament berth.
5. USC: The normally solid pitching corps for the Trojans fell apart in two games against WSU, and their offense wasn’t able to help out, either. Theirs is a sad lineup without a legitimate power hitter. Ricky Oropesa leads the team in home runs with eight.
6. Washington: Anytime you sweep on the road, it’s a good thing — even when you face Oregon. Kyle Conley continued his slugging tear, hitting his Pac-10-leading 15th and 16th home runs over the weekend. He is improving his draft stock every time he hits one out.
7. Stanford: You can’t lose a series to Arizona and expect to move up in the rankings.
8. California: The Bears stole a game from the Sun Devils and were able to compete with the conference’s top team, but no matter how well you can hit — .304 as a team — if you can’t pitch, you won’t win, and the Bears’ 5.60 ERA is near the bottom of the conference.
9. Arizona: Dillon Baird is having an amazing season (.416 BA, five HR, 36 RBI) on an otherwise mediocre Wildcats team. Though they did show some life with a pair of victories over the Cardinal.
10. Oregon: The Ducks’ sweep at the hands of the Huskies shows they have a long way to go to return to conference respectability.
