Freshman tailback Chris Polk came away impressed after posing recently in some of the team’s newly styled uniforms — a departure from baggier versions the team has worn previously.
“They’re way better. They’re real tight. They actually show off our muscles,” Polk said of the three uniforms unveiled at Saturday’s annual spring football scrimmage. “We’re going to look real big out there.”
Polk’s team, Team Purple, looked markedly bigger already Saturday, albeit against second-stringers from the same roster in a 33-0 walloping of Team White in front of about 10,000 fans at Husky Stadium.
Coach Steve Sarkisian told Polk before the game that a strong outing could make him the team’s No. 1 tailback on the depth chart come fall camp. Despite two sore ankles, Polk didn’t disappoint for the Purple, running 95 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.
“I gave it my all today. I’m hurt, so I did everything I could. I just hope that was good enough,” he said.
Anchoring Team Purple was quarterback Jake Locker, who threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-18 passing. He also ran for the first score of the game, a 10-yarder midway through the first quarter.
For Locker, who ran the ball just four times and looked as comfortable as ever in the pocket, it was an effort consistent with what coaches had seen over the past couple of weeks. In three spring scrimmages, Locker completed 69.2 percent of his passes, surpassing the baseline of 60 percent established by Sarkisian for next season.
Somewhat drained after appeasing hundreds of fans by posing for pictures and signing autographs, Locker took all the praise in stride when asked if he felt more polished as a quarterback.
“I’d like to think so,” he said. “We’ll see when fall comes around and we’re playing for real.”
Defensive coordinator Nick Holt mentioned that Locker has always been an excellent athlete.
“Now he’s really developing into quite the quarterback. He’ll only get better,” Holt said.
After Locker’s touchdown, a determined Polk ran it in from nine yards out to give purple a 13-0 lead. Tailback Demitrius Bronson, who opened a lot of eyes with his play this spring, added a 12-yard touchdown to extend purple’s lead to 20-0.
Then running back Willie Griffin scored the final points of the half by turning a short pass from Locker into a 29-yard touchdown. But kicker Erik Folk would miss his second of three point-after attempts on the day.
Team Purple completed its sound thrashing of Team White with less than a minute left in the game, as Locker hit receiver Jermaine Kearse for an 8-yard touchdown.
Kearse led all receivers with five catches for 70 yards. Cornerback Adam Long of Team White tallied a game-high six tackles. Linebacker Mason Foster had two sacks for Purple.
Holt said after the game that coaches wanted the first and second units to line up against each other so players could feel good about themselves entering summer conditioning and fall camp.
But one can only imagine how it felt to be on the short end of a 33-0 pasting with dozens of former UW legends like Lawyer Milloy and Marques Tuiasosopo looking on. Probably something like it felt like all of last season.
