Members of Washington’s women’s cross country team demonstrated this weekend exactly why they ran away with the national championship earlier this season.
Displaying the skills that won them that title, Anita Campbell, Christine Babcock and Kenna Patrick ran their way toward the top of some more leaderboards, this time eclipsing some UW records at the Mt. Sac Relays.
Three weeks after having her 5,000-meter-run record broken, Campbell set a new one in a big way, smashing her old personal record (PR) by 15 seconds with a time of 15:45.85.
Campbell’s time was good enough for second on the Huskies’ all-time list in the 5,000 and fourth in the nation this season. Her time was also the UW’s top qualifier in the event this year.
“We had three women run under 15:51 this year,” said track head coach Greg Metcalf. “It’s just amazing.”
With the result, Campbell joins Katie Follett and Mel Lawrence as regional qualifiers in the 5,000.
Patrick, who also ran the 5,000, torched her old PR by 16 seconds with a time of 16:28.83, which was good enough for ninth place in school history.
Meanwhile, Babcock came within eight-tenths of a second of her PR in the 1,500-meter run, claiming sixth place in UW history in that event.
“For her to come out and run a [4:16.50] — I think that’s the three or four fastest times in the country right now — I thought it was fantastic,” Metcalf said.
Jake Schmitt led the way for the men, scoring a regional qualifier in the 5,000 with a time of 14:03.95, but he had hoped to run faster than 13:50 this weekend.
“He kind of walked off the track a little frustrated with his [result],” Metcalf said of Schmitt.
Schmitt echoed his coach’s sentiments.
“[It’s] not exactly the number that I would’ve liked going into this weekend, [but] I guess I can’t complain,” Schmitt said.
Fellow distance runner Austin Abbott put up another solid performance in the 1,500, coming eight-tenths of a second short of his PR.
