In years past, the Mt. San Antonio College Relays have served as a key meet for the Husky track and field multi-event athletes.
The Thursday-through-Saturday meet will be no different this year, as freshman decathlete Jeremy Taiwo and senior heptathlete Liz Fuller headline the UW multi-event competitors in the respective debuts of their events.
“For Jeremy, getting a national qualifying mark is probably the goal,” said track head coach Greg Metcalf. “That’s the expectation for an All-American [in] indoors.”
Taiwo’s All-American honor came in the NCAA indoor track championships, when he placed 12th in the heptathlon.
Fuller, on the other hand, is at the beginning of her final chance to reach the elusive national meet.
“She’s not the girl coming in expecting to be a national qualifier,” Metcalf said. “For Liz, it’s about going out and improving upon her last one.”
On the track, long-distance specialist Jake Schmitt will return to competition after getting an NCAA mark in the 10,000-meter run two weeks ago.
“The meet will be great,” Metcalf said. “The goal is to go out and run under 13:50 and maybe get a USA qualifier.”
Schmitt is pretty confident about reaching that mark.
“[During the] indoor season, I kept running right around mid-13:50s, and it was week after week after week, so I wasn’t given a chance to rest,” he said. “But after a couple of really solid weeks of training and resting and recovering, I think I’m going to go pop a nice [personal record].”
Two members of the Huskies’ cross country national championship team — Lauren Saylor and Anita Campbell — will also be looking to get NCAA qualifiers this week.
Campbell, who ran for a personal record in the 1,500-meter run last weekend, is set to compete in the 5,000-meter run.
“Anita’s [personal record] is [15:50.36], so we’d like get her a chance to run under 16 minutes and get more than a regional qualifier,” Metcalf said. “That would be the goal for this weekend as well.”
If Campbell succeeds, she has a chance to become the Huskies’ top female qualifier in the 5k, joining teammates Katie Follett and Mel Lawrence as regional qualifiers in the event.
Meanwhile, Saylor will be making her debut in the 10,000-meter run this season at Mt. Sac, where the goal is to get her qualified for nationals as well.
The Huskies will be sending a reduced sprint crew so other sprinters can recover from injuries. They are led by Falesha Ankton, who hopes to improve upon her regional qualifying times.
