The UW crew dominated Washington State Saturday, winning all 10 races against the Cougars in Pullman.

In the women’s varsity eight, the most anticipated race of the day, the UW won by nearly two seconds against a WSU crew that defeated the Huskies last year in Seattle.

“The team performed when they needed to, even though there were mistakes here and there,” said Bob Ernst, women’s head coach and program director.

In the other notable women’s events, the defending champion four dominated the Cougars by 10 seconds, and the UW novices crushed the WSU novices by more than 30 seconds to stay undefeated this season.

As for the men, the Husky varsity eights did not compete due to the fact that Washington State’s men’s crew is a club team. Even though the UW’s best men didn’t race, not a single race on the men’s side was ever in contention.

“I don’t think we could have had a more successful trip than that, especially when you come out to someone else’s course,” Ernst said. “I told the team before we made the trip that in order for us to be a good team, we’ve got to be a good traveling team, and that means beating other good teams on their home courses.”

The UW crew will need to take advantage of the experience and confidence gained Saturday because its schedule only gets more difficult from this point forward.

The No. 3 Husky men will face more stiff competition next weekend in Belmont, Calif., as they take on No. 2 Wisconsin and No. 5 Stanford.

The No. 6 UW women have next weekend off before facing No. 3 California, which the Huskies have struggled against in recent years.

“We’ve got to get ready for California on April 25 at home,” Ernst said. “We haven’t beaten them in a long time. So, it’s back to training for the next two weeks.”
