Sports briefs

Track

In a season filled with record breakers, the Washington track and field team added to its accomplishments at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships last weekend.

Two league titles were won and three indoor school records broken by the Huskies.

Senior Jordan Boase defended his MPSF title in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 46.09 seconds and freshman Jeremy Taiwo won the heptathlon title in his first meet competition.

The No. 22 men finished sixth in the meet, while the No. 21 women placed fifth.

Freshmen Mel Lawrence shattered a previous 3,000-meter school record set by teammate Katie Follett with a time of 9:08:50.

The Huskies looked impressive in a two-day meet that resulted in 11 NCAA automatic qualifying marks and four new MSPF meet records.

Gymnastics

Despite a close road loss to Arizona State last Friday, the Washington gymnastics team recorded a season-high road score of 195.075. The Huskies came just 0.500 short of the Sun Devils but went without a single individual event title.

Starting strong on bars, sophomore Kristen Linton led all the Huskies with a team-best 9.850. Samantha Walior followed with a 9.775 and Ruby Engreitz posted a 9.700 to give the Huskies the edge over the Sun Devils by two-tenths of a point after the first rotation.

Washington put together a 48.675 on vault and won the event after stellar performances by Ashley Houghting, Amanda Cline and Hatsune Akaogi.

The Huskies emerged with second-place honors on the floor and slipped behind the Sun Devils as they entered the final event of the evening on beam.

The No. 22 Washington team finds themselves on the road again this weekend as they prepare for an Oregon State rematch. Last time out, the UW won and snapped a 12-meet losing streak against the Beavers.

Swimming

Focus shifts from the women’s swimming team to the men as they finished up the first day of competition at the men’s Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, Calif. yesterday.

The men are disadvantaged without a diving program but will rely on Scott Spansail and the 800-free relay team of Jon Banker, Russ Mahan, Andre Blyth and Evan Bernier to get an advantage in the pool.

The Huskies placed fourth in that event yesterday ahead of rivals like USC and Arizona State. UW also placed fourth in the 200-medley relay after the first day.

Action picks up today and goes through Saturday.

Golf

After a slow start for the Washington men’s golf team this season, the Huskies were unable to make up any ground at the USC Collegiate last week and finished in 10th place.

The No. 6 Huskies failed to even place a golfer in the top 10. Sophomore Tze Huang Choo was the only golfer close to the top of the standings, finishing 13th. However, his score was negligible for the Huskies because Choo entered play as an individual, not as a member of the team.

Washington will take this week off before continuing play at the Fresno Lexus Classic March 9 and 10 at Sunnyside Country Club.

Due to weather dampening the Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif. the Washington women’s golf team didn’t even get to play a round this week. The golfers will look to take the course at the UNLV Spring Invitational next Monday.
