This weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column will provide a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.
On Feb. 27, a man under the influence of narcotics entered an apartment near 16th Avenue Northeast and tried to take several items from an inhabitant who was in the process of moving. After bystanders attempted to restrain the man, authorities responded and arranged for the individual to be transported to Harborview Medical Center.
The same day, police received a call that the smell of marijuana was coming from a room in McCarty Hall. After responding to the incident, authorities did not find any controlled substances, but confiscated a smoking device to be destroyed. The inhabitant of the room admitted to smoking outside the building earlier in the day.
On March 1, an individual on the third floor of the UW Medical Center caused a disturbance by yelling at security officials. After arriving at the scene, officers assessed that the man was mentally unstable.
Just after midnight the same day, an armed robbery occurred at a residence in the 1700 block of Northeast 55th Street. Two individuals used a handgun to round up the residents and walk one of the inhabitants through the house with a club to find electronic devices. The suspects struck the individual in the head multiple times before fleeing the scene. More information about the incident can be found in The Daily article “House robbed, tenants attacked north of campus,” which printed March 2 and is currently online.
On March 2, police discovered that a car in the triangle parking garage had been broken into. Stolen items include a laptop and purse that are estimated to be worth $600. There was no sign of forced entry into the vehicle.
The same day, authorities responded to a burglary at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. There was no sign of forced entry, but a pair of shoes and iPod speakers were missing from one of the rooms.
Also on Mar. 2, a spray-painted swastika was found on a sign outside of the Aerospace and Engineering building. Because the graffiti could not be removed, the sign will be replaced at a cost of $165.
On March 3, authorities found that three of the entrance gate arms at the west campus parking garage had been forcibly removed from the gates. The machinery was later recovered with minimal damage.
The UW Police Department and the Seattle Police Department’s online blotter provide the information for this column. The online blotter provides a sampling of the hundreds of incidents that SPD responds to each day.
