It was quite the weekend for the Washington track team as the Huskies shattered records and won events on their way to collecting 19 NCAA Regional Qualifiers in the Stanford Invitational.
The Dawgs saw success on both days of the Friday-Saturday meet, with distance runners leading the way Friday while pole-vaulters dominated Saturday.
The UW kicked off the meet with 13 Regional Qualifiers Friday, including a 3:41.62 1500-meter run by senior Austin Abbott.
“When I looked on the field out, I didn’t think I was going to win,” Abbott said on Flotrack.org after his race. “[But] I got right where I wanted to be, had my chance and I ran to the finish line and beat everybody.”
Abbott topped his personal best of 3:44.30 by nearly three seconds and set the UW’s second-best 1500-meter mark.
Friday was also a good night for the Husky women’s distance team.
Sophomores Katie Follett, Lauren Saylor and Kenna Patrick, as well as redshirt freshman Mel Lawrence, led the way in the 5,000-meter run. Each runner qualified for the regional meet.
Follett ran the second-fastest 5,000 meters in UW history with a time of 15:48.72, while Lawrence set the UW freshman record with a time of 15:50.36.
“I haven’t run a 5k on the track since my junior year of high school, so I’m really excited about the outdoor season,” Lawrence told Flotrack.org.
Other UW athletes who qualified for regionals Friday were distance runners Christine Babcock, Kailey Campbell, Anita Campbell and Jake Schmitt, throwers Kyle Nielsen and Brooke Pighin, and high-jumper Kelly McNamee.
Saturday was dominated by UW pole-vaulters as Scott Roth, Jared O’Connor, Ryan Vu, Lara Jones and Andrea Peterson qualified for regionals. Roth won the men’s pole vault in the meet.
Women’s hurdler Falesha Ankton topped her regional qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles in preliminaries with a 13.55 in the finals.
Hammer-thrower Angus Taylor was the final UW athlete who qualified for regionals.
