All is well in Husky nation, with the men’s basketball team fresh off its first Pac-10 regular-season title and picked as the No. 4 seed in the West Region heading into the Big Dance.
But as Husky fans are familiar with, the Dawgs could be one first-round upset away from experiencing the heartbreak of unfulfilled potential after a highly successful season.
What can fans do in that situation? I say root for the conference.
I’m not suggesting a permanent switch of allegiance here, just that you have a temporary interest in Pac-10 teams for the remainder of March Madness.
If you happen to be one of those fans that can only cling to one team, I’ve compiled a guide for which Pac-10 team you should root for, depending on what type of fan you are.
UCLA
For those of you who love dynasties, UCLA is the team for you.
Not only do they have the most NCAA basketball titles — 11 total — they’ve also taken control of the Pac-10 in the last three years and made the Final Four in each.
Just as a word of caution, most sports fans dislike teams that experience a disproportionate amount of success. If you’re going to root for UCLA, be prepared to take some hate at your March Madness viewing party.
USC
Conversely, if you’re a fan who hates dynastic teams, you usually end up rooting for that team’s chief rival, which in this case is the Trojans.
USC wouldn’t even be in the tournament if they hadn’t won the Pac-10 Tournament. They got the automatic bid, upsetting rival UCLA on the way.
USC not only sticks it to its rival, it’s also nearly universally hated because of its successful football program. This should sound familiar if you’re a fan of Boston sports as well.
Arizona State
Do you root for every Cinderella school from the mid/low major conferences? If you do, ASU is your Pac-10 team.
Before joining the expanding conference in 1978, the Sun Devils, along with rival Arizona, were a member of the Western Athletic Conference that includes schools like Boise State and Hawaii.
Though not a mid-major, ASU has experienced limited success playing the big boys, making the NCAA Tournament just six times since the expansion.
Arizona
If you like teams that are consistently going to be in the NCAA’s field of 65, Arizona is your team.
The Wildcats barely made the cut this year to extend their tournament appearances to 26 straight times. Arizona, by most accounts, probably shouldn’t be in the tournament after going 1-5 down the stretch, but sometimes it pays to just be a big-name school and have big-name players.
California
Finally, if you like to root for teams historically similar to the UW, then you’d like the Golden Bears.
Cal has seen some success in recent decades, but in the 1970s and 1980s, the Bears were stuck in limbo — much like the Huskies were in the ’90s, when the UW didn’t win any conference championships.
Also like the UW, the Bears were very successful in the 1950s and 1960s, including winning the NCAA Tournament in 1959.
So, just in case the Huskies make an early exit, try rooting for one of these conference teams.
