Colorado — A man held up two convenience stores in Colorado Springs Wednesday. Police report that the man stole an unknown amount of cash from the first 7-Eleven, but left the second store empty-handed about half an hour later.
The man armed himself with a bat’leth, a traditional double-ended scimitar used by Klingon warriors, measuring three feet long. Police declined to comment of what the bat’leth was made.
Nobody was charged in connection to this robbery.
Salzburg — An advertisement for employment opportunities at a Salzburg finance company has received attention for its unconventional job requirements.
The company intends to only hire Ariens, Capricorns, Taureans, Aquarians and Leos under the belief that individuals with these signs are the best workers.
This advertisement is in accordance to all laws.
South Korea — After nearly daily attempts since April 2005, a woman in South Korea has failed her written driving exam 771 times as of Monday.
Planning to retake the test at an undisclosed future date, the 68-year-old woman, identified only as “Cha,” needs to score a 60 in order to pass the exam. She says the highest she has scored to date is a 50.
Cha has spent over 4 million won on fees for her exams.
Britain — A decision has been reached by Britain’s highest court Wednesday regarding the proper classification of teacakes.
The debate on whether chocolate teacakes are cake or cookie (biscuit) has been ongoing for the last 13 years.
Marks & Spencer, a manufacturer of chocolate teacakes, brought this matter to court over taxation — cookies are not charged the VAT tax, while cakes are. M&S claims that they should be refunded the tax they paid from 1973 to 1994.
The European Court of Justice decided that M&S is entitled to a full refund of the £3.5 million paid to the Customs and Excise Commissioner over this period.
Bejing — A Chinese man has become the oldest person to stand trial in Bejing Wednesday.
Zhou Zhiping, 99, is accused of swindling £76,000 from an American. He allegedly claimed that his close connections to the government would help him unfreeze the assets of former nationalists held in the United States.
Zhou was released on bail due to his age, though still faces 10 years in prison if he is found guilty.
Hampshire — Lovestruck Adam Pacitti has launched a worldwide search for a real-life ‘ugly Betty.’
With a Web site to help him, the 20-year-old left his studies at a university with plans to spend £3,000 as he extends his search from the U.K. to the United States.
His goal is to date and marry this elusive woman, though 2,500 applications have been received by his Web site.
