Husky tennis to face top teams in Great Northwest Shootout

There are simply no easy matches for the UW men’s tennis team this season. The Huskies will continue their tough schedule at home this weekend when they face off against two more ranked teams, No. 71 Oklahoma and No. 30 Boise State, at the Great Northwest Shootout.

The Shootout is a round robin tournament hosted by the UW.

“As tennis players, we can’t wait to play,” coach Matt Anger said. “The environment at college matches is so exciting. It’s a lot of fun and we can’t wait for it to happen.”

The Huskies have plenty to be excited about. After winning his singles match against No. 35 Jaime Hunt of Georgia last weekend, sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan was named Pac-10 Player of the Week.

“He’s maturing into what I think he’s gonna be, a top college player,” Anger said.

Nedunchezhiyan and the rest of the Dawgs will look to build on last weekend’s performance.

“We’re hungry and we are the hunters and we’re out there hunting and waiting for our next opponent,” Anger said. “We’re just going to keep working and keep playing and work our way up the rankings.”

Oklahoma and Boise State certainly won’t make things easy on the Huskies. The Sooners boast a 2-0 record and three ranked players while Boise State will be the biggest challenge of the weekend. Earlier in the season, they upset then No. 14 Pepperdine on the road. The Broncos boast three ranked players, including No. 22 Clancy Shields.

“I’ve known their coach for a long time and their teams are always very strong,” Anger said. “But they’re going to be a very difficult opponent for us.”
