Battle Royale

1. Instant Super Bowl analysis. What were your thoughts?

Maks: Best Super Bowl ever? Really? By the midway point of the third quarter I was dedicating more of my attention to the bag of tortilla chips under my chair than the game itself. I get the fact that there were several top-notch plays, but how can you call it better than last year’s game with so many questionable calls going against Arizona? And how does Kurt Warner’s fumble at the end not even get reviewed by the referees? It’s just inexcusable.

Zach: Why does Santonio Holmes have to be so good!? It was a great game; exciting from start to finish. The commercials were funny and there were no incidents at halftime. It was everything you want in a Super Bowl.

Honsen: I thought the game was well-played and exciting, possibly an instant classic. However, some of the refereeing was somewhat controversial, especially the lack of a review on the final fumble play. The original call appeared correct, but why not take another look on the most important game of the year? And why is it that Pittsburgh always seems to get the benefit of the calls on their way to a Super Bowl victory?

Christian: Pittsburgh annoys me.

2. The Mariners are interested in picking up free agent Bobby Abreu. If not Abreu, who else wouldn’t you mind seeing in an M’s uniform this season?

Maks: Someone who can hit a little white ball a long way. So, anybody other than myself, Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Sweeney, Russell Branyan, Chris Shelton, Chris Woodward and Bryan LaHair, to be exact.

Zach: Anybody good? I’m actually really excited about someone we already have; GM Jack Zduriencik. And I wouldn’t mind seeing a certain 39-year-old “kid” come back home.

Honsen: I think the Mariners would be a good team to lift the league-wide blacklist on Barry Bonds. Even if he spends the entire season on trial, the M’s can’t make a worse signing than Richie Sexson.

Christian: Mickey Mantle in his prime, Willie Mays in his prime and 1998 Mark McGwire.

3. There has been speculation that Bobby Knight could be interested in coaching again. Is he still fit to coach college basketball?

Maks: As long as he’s fit to throw chairs a really long way, I’m all for it.

Zach: Is Happy Gilmore fit to play golf?

Honsen: Well, his coaching abilities certainly weren’t the reason he chose to resign. His son said it was because he was too exhausted. The question is, does Knight still have enough mental stamina to last an entire grueling season of coaching college basketball?

Christian: Fit? Maybe. Insane? Definitely. But he’s such a great color commentator that I would hate to see him leave the booth. It’s probably better for his blood pressure, too. And the throats of potential players.

4. Andrew Bynum is out for a long time with a torn MCL but Kobe scored 61 points against the Knicks. Is Bynum really a big loss for the Lakers?

Maks: In terms of wins and losses during the regular season, probably not so much. But if he’s anything less than 80 percent in two or three months or when the postseason rolls around, the Lakers won’t be able to compete for a title. The fact that both of Bynum’s knees have now endured some pretty major tears in the last couple of years makes me wonder if Bynum will ever reach his potential. That’s kind of sad.

Zach: Did you watch the finals last year? I guess if Kobe can drop 101 he can make up for Bynum’s absence.

Honsen: The Lakers will be fine without Bynum for the regular season, but they will miss Bynum in the playoffs. It may have been his absence that allowed Boston and their Big Three to beat the Lakers and win the NBA Championship last season.

Christian: Bynum was just starting to come into his own, so yeah, it’s a big loss. But I have faith that they can lose to Cleveland in the finals without him.
