This weekly crime blotter is to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column will provide a brief overview of recent crimes that affect the UW community.
On Feb. 19, a parking attendant was harassed behind the Health Sciences Building. A man in his 50s with grey hair became agitated when he had difficulties finding a parking spot, and grabbed the woman’s lanyard. The attendant waited to file the report in person instead of over the phone. UW community members are encouraged to call the police immediately when an incident occurs.
Just before midnight on the same day, police received a complaint that the smell of marijuana was coming from a room in Terry Hall. After arriving on the scene, authorities found a six-pack of beer and several of the occupants admitted to smoking marijuana. All of the suspects admitted to being under 21, and police confiscated a glass pipe, grinder and a small amount of the controlled substance that was later destroyed.
On Feb. 20, police received a call about a transient who was yelling and causing a disturbance on the third floor of the art building. Officers responded and escorted the woman out of the building with her belongings after giving her a criminal trespass warning.
On Feb. 22, four students were found smoking marijuana behind the Northlake Building. The remaining substance was confiscated and the students’ names were referred to resident housing services.
On Feb. 23, a man made a commotion at Agua Verde Café by shouting obscenities and attempting to fight a restaurant patron. Police responded to the scene and the individual was brought to the emergency room for an involuntary mental health evaluation.
The same day police received a report that a Stevens Court residence was burglarized. The inhabitant locked the door before leaving for class, and came back that evening to find personal items missing. Authorities believe that the door was pried open. Students can register electronic devices and bicycles on the UWPD’s Web site under crime prevention tips.
Also on Feb. 23, police discovered graffiti in Red Square near the exhaust stacks and on the retaining wall by Meany Hall. The yellow paint spelled out “Happy Birthday Alley,” among other unintelligible symbols. The university picked up the tab for the tag, which cost $250 to remove.
The UWPD and the Seattle Police Department’s online blotter provide the information for this column. The online blotter provides a sampling of the hundreds of incidents the SPD responds to each day.
