Despite arrests and patrols, crime persists in U-District

Despite an increased police presence and arrests that have taken repeat offenders off the streets, yet another violent robbery took place in the area north of Northeast 45th Street this past weekend, near 22nd Avenue Northeast and Northeast 47th Street.

Senior Sam McHaney points to the place he was punched repeatedly in the face early Sunday morning while walking home with a group of friends. The attack, which happened near 22nd Avenue Northeast and Northeast 47th Street, is one of several recent violent incidents in the U-District.

According to the timely warning notification sent out by the UW Police Department, three UW students were attacked by multiple suspects while walking home at approximately 1:30 a.m. Feb 8.

Sam McHaney, Kevin Williams and Chris Hilleren were walking on Northeast 47th Street and passed in front of Phi Delta Theta fraternity on the corner of 21st Avenue Northeast, where the suspects were loitering outside. One of the suspects commented on the “nice North Face jacket” that one of the victims was wearing. McHaney, Williams and Hilleren continued walking toward 22nd Avenue Northeast when they were attacked.

“They ran up on us all of a sudden and grabbed my friend,” McHaney said.

The assailants demanded the victims’ cell phones and wallets and began taking the items by force.

“They punched me in the face and pushed us over the guardrail,” McHaney said.

Williams, however, who was grabbed first by the assailants, was able to break free and ran toward his apartment where he dialed 911.

After the victims had been robbed, the assailants fled in the direction they had come from, and Hilleren said he heard them yelling near the fraternity where they had initially seen the attackers.

When police arrived, they searched the fraternity and found and arrested the three attackers. Police also arrested a fourth person who was present in the fraternity and had an outstanding warrant.

The four people arrested are not UW students.

According to a press release from the fraternity, one of the three attackers was the younger brother of a member of the house and had obtained the door code when he had secretly lived with his brother earlier in the quarter. The member who released the door code has been suspended.

Nick Feldman, a spokesperson for the Interfraternity Council (IFC) said Phi Delta Theta fraternity members have been very helpful and are doing everything they can to remedy the situation.

IFC has yet to determine if any punitive action will be taken against Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

In a separate and unrelated incident this weekend, a female, non-UW student has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by two males while attending a fraternity party. Police and IFC have not yet released the name of the fraternity involved or whether or not the allegations are against fraternity members.
