UW alumnus Christopher John Monfort is suspected in the shooting of Seattle Police Department (SPD) officer Tim Brenton and was in critical condition Saturday from a gunshot wound to the head after a confrontation with police, according to The Seattle Times.
Officer Brenton and a field-training officer were in their parked patrol car in the 100 block of 29th Avenue South around 10 p.m. Oct. 31, when multiple shots were fired at the vehicle from a reportedly light-colored sedan. Brenton died after being struck multiple times, and the student officer was wounded.
Police received a tip in the ongoing investigation during a memorial for Brenton last Friday that lead them to the 13700 block of 56th Avenue South in Tukwila. A man emerged and pointed a gun at detectives as they investigated the scene, where a Datsun 210, matching the description of the suspect vehicle, was located. They fired on the suspect in self-defense, and the man was transported to Haborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The Seattle Times reported Saturday that the involved suspect was Monfort, who graduated from the UW with a bachelor’s degree in law, society and justice in March 2008.
The SPD found evidence in the suspect’s apartment, including improvised explosive devices and a rifle, that lead detectives to believe that the person is responsible for the murder and an arson attack on Oct. 22. The second incident involved two suspects seen at a city maintenance facility in the 700 block of South Charles Street who fled after a police car erupted in flames. According to The Seattle Times, police also found a “manifesto” expressing Monfort’s dissatisfaction with police brutality.
According to The Seattle Times, Monfort was a part of the UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity’s McNair Scholars Program that prepares students for graduate work, and he recently lost his job as a security guard.
