Alex Kirk made the most of Senior Day.
Kirk almost made it look too easy, scoring a pair of goals against No. 19 USC (12-6-1, 4-3-2) to double her season total. Unfortunately, Kirk couldn’t do it herself, and the Huskies ended the regular season with a 2-2 draw.
“I was really excited to go out and play for our team and our fans,” Kirk said. “It was our last chance to make sure we get into the tournament. I had no idea [I would play so well]. It was cool to go out there and do that for the team.”
Although they couldn’t come away with the victory, Washington (11-5-4, 3-3-3) will gain from a strong showing against a ranked team. The Huskies had a chance to make a real statement Friday, playing well against No. 4 UCLA before falling 2-1.
The game against the Trojans highlighted a problem the Huskies have been having all season: finishing plays. Washington finds ways to get shots off; they just don’t seem to find the back of the net. Never was this more evident than against USC, when the Huskies were credited with 20 shots but only came away with Kirk’s two goals.
“It’s been our biggest problem this year,” Kirk said. “There have only been one or two games this year we haven’t outshot the other team, and some games, we just can’t find the back of the net. Definitely a recurring theme this season is getting 20 shots and two goals.”
Head coach Lesle Gallimore would love to see those shots turn into goals but recognizes that her team is creating good opportunities.
“To quote a friend of mine, Sigi Schmid, who coaches the Sounders: ‘In the game of soccer, you start worrying when you’re not creating opportunities,’” Gallimore said. “As long as you’re creating opportunities, you’re giving yourself a chance to win. When you start losing those chances, that’s when you get worried as a coach. I’m really pleased with what we created today. We fought hard, and USC is a good team.”
Against UCLA, the Huskies and Bruins had to overcome an incredible downpour that left the field completely soaked. The Bruins won a very sloppy game in which the ball would often stop rolling the second it hit a patch of mud. Washington had a couple of chances to take control of the game, but a shot by McKenna Waitely hit the crossbar, and another shot missed the goal by just a foot.
Now that the regular season has come to a close, focus is shifting to whether or not Washington will be seen in the postseason. The NCAA tournament selection show can be seen today on ESPN News at 5 p.m. Washington has set itself up well for the NCAA tournament, playing a tough schedule that has given it the 23rd RPI in the country. In the SoccerTimes.com poll, Washington is currently ranked 27th. However, Gallimore, who has 200 career wins, has been around long enough to know that you never take anything for granted.
“I’m hoping that the postseason happens for us, and I’m hoping that that’s when we start to finish on the end of those chances that we’ve been creating because I think we can put up some really good numbers,” Gallimore said. “But I just want our name to come up somewhere tomorrow. It doesn’t matter where.”
