Huskies struggle in Hawaii on first day

Unfortunately for them, the Washington women’s golf team picked up where it left off.

Just one week after struggling through a team-combined final round score of 32-over, the UW had another bad outing Monday during the first round of the Turtle Bay Resort Invitational at Kahuku, Hawaii.

“No one played well,” head coach Mary Lou Mulflur said from the north shore of Oahu. “It was a very disappointing day.”

The Huskies fired a team-combined 24-over 312 and sit in 16th-place after Monday’s first round. They are 31 shots behind leader UC Davis. An inability to control shot distances and a poor putting and chipping performance hounded the UW during yesterday’s first round.

Junior Anya Alvarez led the UW with a 2-over 74. Despite having the low score for the team, Alvarez could have been better. Said Mulflur: “Anya did not play well.”

The four remaining players all struggled on the George Fazio course. Seniors Molly Aronsson and Christina Yoon did not make any birdies, as both shot 7-over 79. Freshman Sadena Parks fired an 8-over 80, while Karinn Dickinson, who performed well last week, was the highest Washington finisher yesterday, shooting a 9-over 81.

Mulflur said that neither conditions nor the golf course itself were reasons for the poor play.

“It’s an easy golf course, we just did not execute,” she said.

Following Monday’s first-round effort, the players were back out practicing in the afternoon and into the evening. Mulflur said her players were working on distance control, chipping, and putting — the exact things that failed them during the first round.

Today’s second round will be played again at the George Fazio course, while Wednesday’s final round will be played at the Arnold Palmer-designed course. Today and tomorrow are the last days the women have to get some tournament experience, as the fall season concludes with this event.
