Women’s golf to compete at Turtle Bay

One day, they’ll fire a team-combined score of 1-under. The next, they’ll look completely different and shoot a team-combined score of 32-over.

That’s what it’s been like this fall for the Washington women’s golf team. They will hope to find some consistency this week at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational.

The No. 35 UW will be playing two different courses in Kahuku, Hawaii: the first two rounds at the George Fazio-designed par-72, 6,261-yard course, and the final round at the Arnold Palmer-designed, par-72, 6,361-yard course. Head coach Mary Lou Mulflur believes that her squad can take advantage of the short yardage.

“We feel like it sets up well for us,” she said. “It’s not long, and that will bring in some of the field that maybe isn’t as long of hitters. We feel like we can use that to our advantage.”

Mulflur is using a starting five that was consistent last season. Junior Karinn Dickinson, who tied for ninth last week, will lead a group of Huskies that have all had success in one way or another this fall. Joining her will be junior Anya Alvarez, seniors Christina Yoon and Molly Aronsson and sophomore Sadena Parks.

After arriving Friday, the team has had two practice rounds to get accustomed to the courses. It has been more than two years since the team has played a tournament in Hawaii.

The team has been producing inconsistent results this fall. Some days, the UW will play like one of the top teams in the country, much like the first two rounds last week in Las Vegas. Or, they’ll do the exact opposite, like the final round last week, when the Huskies shot 32-over.

“It’s been kind of up and down,” Mulflur said of the fall season thus far. “It hasn’t been real consistent yet.”

Mulflur will hope for more consistency during the next three days, as Wednesday’s final round marks the last competitive golf for the women until 2010, where they will play in the Peg Barnard Invitational in February.

This year marks the first year that the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational includes a women’s field. The UW will be facing off against some good competition, including Pac-10 competitors Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and USC.
