Yes, the Washington women’s basketball team beat Corban College by 72 points last night. Yes, Corban shot 5 percent — yes, 5 percent — from the field in the first half. And, yes, the Huskies racked up 11 steals — in the first half.

Redshirt sophomore center Regina Rogers is tied up by Corban defense in Washington's 106-34 exhibition win yesterday.

Nonetheless, the Huskies showed intensity on defense and obliterated Corban for the second consecutive year, 106-34. They shot a scorching 63.4 percent from the field compared to just 18.4 percent for Corban. The UW finished their exhibition games 2-0 and will go into their game against Portland State on Saturday full of confidence.

“We had a lot of fun out there,” head coach Tia Jackson said. “Every player on the floor scored, and we shared the ball extremely well. I’m extremely proud of the girls, not only for taking advantage in the open court, but for hitting the shots when they got them.”

Senior Sami Whitcomb led all scorers with 23 points, and sophomore Regina Rogers bounced back from her forgettable debut with 12 points and five rebounds on 5-for-7 shooting. Scoring seemed easy for Rogers, who used her wide frame to muscle Corban defenders out of the way.

“It was my second game, and I still was nervous, but my guards made it easier for me tonight,” Rogers said. “They helped me with defense and offense. With my team behind me, I feel like I can achieve anything.”

It was a defensive stat-fest for the UW, as it forced 25 turnovers in the game and kept Corban to 1-19 shooting in the first half alone. Jackson was impressed with her team’s defensive intensity.

“We really pride ourselves on our aggression defensively,” Jackson said, “particularly to start the game. It was just good to see that our defense pressure was causing some problems.”

Senior Laura McLellan followed her 18-point, six-rebound effort last week with another efficient performance, hitting all five of her shots. Junior Sarah Morton danced around defenders en route to four points, eight assists and one turnover.

“It was a lot of fun,” Morton said. “It’s easy when I know I have a lot of ammo around me. Once I get on the inside of the paint, it’s fun. I can choose what I want to do, and I’m confident in whatever I do because I got [my teammates].”

Monday’s blowout enabled some of the freshmen to see action for the first time in a Husky uniform. Freshmen Jeneva Anderson and Amanda Johnson both made their first career baskets, prompting some loud cheers off the bench.

“It was fun to get everybody out there and see the freshman get rid of those jitters,” Jackson said. “Their confidence got boosted.”
