From strong-arm robberies to arson near apartment buildings, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.
Friday, Sept. 25
Officers approached two men, and one stated that his girlfriend slapped him and ended the relationship in the 4500 block of 19th Avenue Northeast. Police located the woman, and she stated that she ran into her ex-boyfriend and that he had been yelling when she slapped him. She was arrested for assault in the 4th degree and transported to King County Jail.
Tuesday, Sept. 29
A victim contacted officers on duty and reported that he was robbed near University Way Northeast and Northeast 42nd Street by three male suspects. The man said that the suspects asked for his purse and one displayed a knife. The perpetrators fled northbound on University Way Northeast, and no suspects were positively identified. The victim does not wish to press charges.
Thursday, Oct. 1
An officer dispatched to the S1 parking lot found a male unconscious in the driver seat of a vehicle. Syringes were discovered on the passenger seat, and the suspect was arrested.
Friday, Oct. 2
A resident of McMahon Hall reported that someone stole her laptop and iPhone from her dorm room when she left for five minutes to use the restroom. The victim closed the door but did not lock it, and she returned to find the items missing, at an estimated loss of $1,500.
Saturday, Oct. 3
An unknown suspect set fire to a couch and three dumpsters at the rear of an apartment building in the 5500 block of 15th Avenue Northeast. The items partially obstructed an exit of the building, and the smoke detectors in the building were not activated by the flames that almost reached the top of the complex. Later that night, mattresses and other debris were lit in an alley behind the 1300 block of Northeast 56th Street. Authorities believe the incidents may be related.
Sunday, Oct. 4
Police received a report that someone had cut the cords of 10 computer mice in Hutchinson Hall. Upon investigation, officers estimated the damage to be $100.
Monday, Oct. 5
A victim notified officers that he had arranged to repurchase his stolen laptop at Odegaard Library via craigslist. A plain-clothes officer oversaw the transaction and apprehended the suspects connected with the stolen property. One suspect claimed he was not aware that the computer was stolen, stating that he purchased the item for $100 from an unknown person on the street. He was transported to King County Jail on outstanding warrants, and the other suspect was released.
A victim reported that someone broke into her office at the Magnuson Health Sciences Building and stole a laptop and several other items and disturbed her desk drawers. The suspect left a post-it note stating that he or she was borrowing the computer and would return it. Other items of value in the room were not taken.
