The UW volleyball team has been unstoppable on the road this season, beating top teams such as No. 4 Florida, No. 7 Oregon and No. 9 Minnesota. After a long five weeks away from home, fans will finally get a chance to see the No. 3 Huskies display their talent at Hec Edmundson Pavilion this weekend.
The UW will welcome Arizona State (11-3) tonight and will face No. 18 Arizona (12-1) tomorrow. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
After impressive road victories against tough competition, the UW (12-0) has proven that it is deserving of its ranking. Gaining the toughness and experience on the road was great for the team, but they’re happy to finally be able to play in front of their home crowd.
“It’s a really tough thing to win and play well on the road, so we’re proud that we’ve done that,” senior Jill Collymore said. “But we’re really excited to come back home. I think this is the best place to play. We have the best fans and it’s such a great environment.”
The Huskies are coming off two huge wins against the Oregon schools. Last Friday, they faced No. 7 Oregon in a hostile road environment. Despite the crowd and the pressure of their first Pac-10 opener, the Huskies stood tall and swept the Ducks, 25-18, 26-24 and 25-19.
Two days later, the Dawgs continued their dominance by sweeping Oregon State, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-21.
“It was big,” head coach Jim McLaughlin said of the Oregon win, “They are a really good team and it was a tough environment. I thought we came out and did what we needed to do to get the win, and now we have to just get better. I was proud of how well they played.”
Winners of 12 consecutive matches and 36 straight sets, the team is simply on fire. Their 36-set streak ties the program record, which was set by the 2005 national championship team. The 2005 team also started its season by sweeping its first 12 matches before dropping a set to Cal in the next match. Although the current streak is impressive, the Huskies aren’t feeling any pressure to remain undefeated.
“[Keeping the streak alive] is not the type of the thing that pressures us,” senior Jill Collymore said. “Pressure is a privilege anyways. If there’s any pressure, there’s just pressure to meet our standards. If we do that, we will crush people in three sets.”
Instead, the team will hope that its home crowd will apply some pressure on the opponents.
“Hopefully we can create an environment that can put pressure on the Arizona schools,” McLaughlin said.
Despite being unranked, Arizona State poses a challenge that the Huskies must be ready for. Last weekend, the Sun Devils defeated No. 14 UCLA 3-0. Arizona State hasn’t defeated the Huskies since a five-set win against the UW in 2002.
Arizona has shown flashes of success as well. The Wildcats beat No. 13 USC last weekend to improve their record to 12-0, the best start in program history. Although they dropped their next match against UCLA, they will definitely be on the top of their game, especially against a team like Washington.
The Huskies will hope to carry on the success they’ve had against Arizona in the past. In their last 10 meetings, the Huskies have yet to lose.
