The second-round dunks turned in by Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Venoy Overton probably gave 5-foot-8-inch Isaiah Thomas reason to worry.
Overton, twisting and turning in mid-air, turned a would-be two-handed windmill into a reverse throw-down. Guest judges Christian Welp, Todd McCullough and Eldridge Recasner – all former Husky greats with NBA experience –rated Overton’s dunk a 29/30.
Then Bryan-Amaning, driving baseline, put the ball through his legs, switching from right hand to left, and jammed it in over his opposite shoulder while coming down on the other side of the rim. The dunk drew a perfect score from the judges.
So, the diminutive Thomas decided to give the Friday night crowd at Bank of America and ESPNU’s Midnight Madness audience something to savor: a dunk over the 6-foot-9-inch Bryan-Amaning.
“Isaiah. Isaiah. We have practice tomorrow,” cautioned Lorenzo Romar, the emcee for the night‘s festivities, which also included a scrimmage and 3-point shootout.
In a homage to UW legend and mentor Nate Robinson, Thomas took a single power dribble into the lane, cleared his teammate’s head, and finished with a resounding left-hand dunk. The move sent the arena into a frenzy of excitement and earned Thomas the slam-dunk title over competitors Bryan-Amaning, Overton, Clarence Trent and Darnell Gant.
One fan sitting near courtside held up a sign that read: “No Cure For Swag Flu.” UW fans can only hope that kind of “swag” is also contagious.
