One year ago, the Washington women’s golf team finished second to last at the Stanford Collegiate.
Seems like 2009 is a different story.
Junior Anya Alvarez led the way for the Huskies at this weekend’s Stanford Collegiate, shooting a 4-under 209 and tied for third place overall. As a team, the UW finished alone in sixth place. Their three-day total of 876 was better than a number of highly ranked teams, including No. 5 California, No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 13 Arizona.
Senior Molly Aronsson finished tied for 23rd at 4-over. Sophomore Sadena Parks proved that she is maturing as a golfer, finishing tied for 33rd after a final round 71.
“Our top three played well, and we were pleased with Anya, Molly and Sadena,” head coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. “It was a solid week, and it would have been nice to beat another team or two, but overall, it was a good week.”
The squad bounced back from a disappointing finish last week at the Edean Ihlanfeldt with a better performance. Mulflur said she “definitely” sees the confidence level rising.
“It’s our second event, and we get to get a few more rounds under our belts,” she said. “You start to feel a little better and start to be more comfortable.”
Sophomore Darcie Richmond and freshman Brittany Tallman rounded out the group. Richmond struggled after shooting a first-round 72 and finished tied for 67th. Tallman, a redshirt freshman, couldn’t find her game and finished in 78th place.
