From continued incidents of possible arson to the arrest of a criminal burglarizing Greek Row, this weekly crime blotter aims to inform readers about offenses on and surrounding campus. While in-depth articles may be written about specific incidents, this column provides a brief overview of recent crimes that impact the UW community.
Wednesday, October 7
At 9:30 a.m., a woman left her office in the Paul Allen Computer Science and Engineering Building and returned 15 minutes later to find that someone had stolen the purse she left on her chair. An area check yielded negative results, and no suspects were identified.
A man saw someone attempting to steal his motorcycle in the S1 parking lot. While attempting to use an unknown object to start the ignition, the suspect damaged the ignition column, ruining the vehicle. The damage is estimated to be $1200, and there are no leads at this time.
Thursday, October 8
An officer contacted a man in a sleeping bag at the Wall of Death by the Burke-Gillman trail and informed him that he was in violation of a regulation that prohibits people from sleeping on campus.
Police received a report that a dell projector and cables had been stolen from Thomson Hall. It appeared that the door had been left unlocked, and the estimated damage was $3,216. There are no suspects at this time.
A woman attempted to open a bank account at the Wells Fargo branch located at 4100 University Way NE to find that someone had already opened an account with her social security number. The victim was advised to place fraud alerts on her credit history and social security number by contacting the three credit reporting bureaus and the Social Security Administration.
A student in the UW Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct began throwing a temper tantrum by flailing on the ground after she inquired what would happen if she was expelled or banned from campus. The suspect left the scene before officers arrived.
Friday, October 9
There has been a recent chain of burglaries that have occurred in fraternities on Greek Row in which a number of laptops have been stolen. After a fraternity house was burglarized in the 4600 block of 21st Avenue Northeast around 4:45 a.m., authorities arrested a suspect who matched the description almost half an hour later. The individual had 12 iPods on his person and was arrested without incident.
Officers received a report from an RA that he had found a plastic bag containing what he suspected to be marijuana. The substance was found unattended in a public area, and no suspects were identified. The evidence was taken to the UW Police Department (UWPD) to be destroyed.
Officers responded to William H. Gates Hall after receiving a report of people using drugs in the nearby bushes. Authorities contacted the suspect, who stated that he had no marijuana in his possession, but had been smoking it. The individual then produced a plastic bag with .5 grams of a green, leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana. Officers released the suspect after informing him that he would receive a criminal citation in the mail.
After receiving a report of individuals smoking marijuana by the Social Work/ Speech and Hearing Building, officers responded to the scene and found four males matching the descriptions in a nearby alley. The authorities smelled recently burned marijuana and questioned the suspects individually. One of the suspects relinquished a plastic bag with 1.89 grams of a green, leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana after agreeing to a search of his person and belongings. He received a warning for possession of less than 40 grams of suspected marijuana, and officers contacted his mother to explain the incident.
An officer stopped an individual carrying a can of Keystone beer and heading east on Northeast 47th Street. The suspect appeared to be intoxicated and was cited for Minor in Possession of Alcohol after identifying himself with his student ID card.
Around 9 p.m., a female walking in a group near Northeast 47th Street and Brooklyn Avenue Northeast left her friends and was approached by a male suspect who demanded her money. After she refused, the individual grabbed her wallet and fled the scene. The victim received injuries to her hip, elbows and knees after falling while attempting to chase the suspect. The incident is being investigated by the Seattle Police Department (SPD).
Saturday, October 10
An individual returning home around 3 a.m. found paper burning in the hallway of his apartment building. The Seattle Fire Department arrived on the scene, and roughly one square foot of carpet was damaged.
Around 9:30 p.m., officers received a report of a possible incident of arson in the 4300 block of 8th Avenue Northeast. Someone lit an item that appeared to be an oven mitt and put it in a barbecue next to the residence. The flames were contained within the barbecue and were quickly extinguished by the Seattle Fire Department.
Wednesday, October 14
A male suspect approached a female student heading west in the 1900 block of Northeast 47th Street around 7:39 p.m. and grabbed her by the neck. He then put his hand in her pocket, but fled eastbound after being interrupted by a passing vehicle. The victim did not sustain any injuries or lose any of her belongings. The incident is being investigated by the UWPD.

Ahh, so that explains why I didn't sleep my freshman year.

Get these trashy greek row places out of here and half the crime will vanish. All that the greek system does is fuel drugs, drinking and party like behaviours that eventually flood into the surrounding areas.
