1. Every week, it seems there is a new No. 1 in college basketball. Of the top five or so teams, which do you think is the best and why?
Nari: It’s close between the Demon Deacons and Blue Devils, with the slight edge to the Deacs. We’ll see Wednesday night who really takes the edge when the two face off. Wake Forest had won 16 straight, not too mention beating North Carolina, Boston College and Clemson before falling to Virginia Tech last week. This is a consistent team, and despite getting too comfortable against the Hokies, the Deacs understand the game and are too good to not bounce back from last week.
Christian: North Carolina still looks like the scariest team to me. Maybe that’s just because Tyler Hansbrough is weird looking.
Maks: Looks like we’ll find out the answer today when Duke and Wake Forest square off. Speaking of Duke, which was better: Christian Laettner’s stomp on the chest of Kentucky’s Aminu Timberlake, or Houston guard Aubrey Coleman’s stomp on the face of Chase Budinger?
Zach: That’s a really tough question. The players should decide it themselves . . . possibly in some kind of tournament . . . possibly played in March. It could be excellent for sports gamblers. That said, I’m going to go with Duke until they inevitably lose in the Sweet 16.
2. Super Bowl is this weekend. In a bad economy, what kinds of commercials are you looking for?
Nari: In a bad economy, should there even be any commercials?
Christian: I’m waiting to see all of the commercials of Pittsburgh players posing with the trophy, with maybe a couple of shots of Arizona guys mixed in. That’s how it was the last time the Steelers faced an NFC West team in the Super Bowl, anyway.
Maks: The kind that come on right as Tim Legler starts talking. Oops, wrong sport.
Zach: I think the frogs put it best when they said “Bud,” “Weis,” “Er.”
3. The Oklahoma City Thunder have now won 10 games. Do you think they’ll end up winning more than the 20 that the Sonics won in their final season in Seattle?
Nari: Let’s do the math, add, divide, subtract... Possible, but unlikely. Even though there are still 37 games left for OKC, the schedule doesn’t favor them.
Christian: No.
Maks: If I’m Blake Griffin, I would hope so.
Zach: Maybe. They’re 10-35 right now, so it’s going to be close. Clay Bennett karma says no, while Kevin Durant’s skill says yes. In an interesting note, however, 18 teams already have 20 wins. It’s a sad day for a franchise when they are shooting for 20 wins.
4. Covenant School women’s basketball coach Micah Grimes was fired after his high school team shutout Dallas Academy, a school specializing in teaching students with “learning differences,” 100-0. Should Grimes have been fired?
Nari: The coach claims that he played with honor and integrity. Come on; he’s kidding right? He’s a competitor, sure, but let’s take into consideration that the opponents were students struggling with “learning differences.” There’s nothing honorable about that. It’s shameful.
Christian: What? Was 100 points not enough? Maybe they wanted them to win by 150. More importantly, why wasn’t the coach of the losing team fired? He clearly isn’t getting enough out of his players if they couldn’t even manage a single basket in a girls’ basketball game. Heck, he might be the worst high school coach in America.
Maks: He probably shouldn’t have been fired. Though I’m pretty sure the outcome would’ve been reversed had P.J. Carlesimo been coaching instead.
Zach: Dallas Academy hasn’t won a game in four years, and there are only eight girls on the varsity team — 20 in the entire school. The Covenant school was known for skill at basketball. These two teams should never have played. Running up the score against Dallas Academy by shooting threes and pressing in the fourth quarter was low, and for that, the coach should be fired. What’s worse is that the game received national media attention, which further embarrasses the girls of the Dallas Academy.
