On Saturday, UW women’s tennis swept Portland.

On Sunday, men’s tennis swept No. 67 San Francisco.

It was a dominant weekend for the men’s and women’s tennis teams, and men’s coach Matt Anger said it was all about making things harder for the opponent.

“If you go right down the line there for our guys, they’re going to make life tough on the other guys,” Anger said. “Now, I can’t say were gonna always win or when we’re gonna win, but I know we can make life tough on the opponent.”

With the sweeps, the men move to 18-0 in total individual singles play and 8-1 in doubles play.

Their only loss in their 7-0 victory came in doubles when Kildahl and Nedunchezhiyan lost to Portland’s Zivkovic and Schleining in a tough 8-6 battle.

Kildahl and Nedunchezhiyan battled back Sunday against the Dons, winning their match 8-1.

“We lost a little focus last Friday, didn’t play as well as we wanted to and got a little frustrated,” Kildahl said. “So we decided before today that we would go in 100 percent and not repeat what we did last Friday. And we did. We played how we wanted to play, and we played well.”

Nedunchezhiyan and Patrick Fishcer continued to prove their versatility this weekend, winning matches at both No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

“If you look at our guys, Jeevan [Nedunchezhiyan] is very talented guy,” Anger said. “Very quick. And Patrick [Fishcer] is very solid. He makes things tough on the other guy.”

Fischer had to show more than just skill to win his match Friday.

Portland’s Filip Zivkovic, who didn’t lose a singles match all last year, took Fischer into three sets with Fischer ultimately triumphing 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.

“It wasn’t easy, because he was serving pretty good and was playing the opposite of my game — trying to keep the points short and coming in a lot — so I wasn’t really getting my rhythm,” Fischer said. “I thought at the end I was just in better shape than he was. I finally caught him getting a little tired.”

Junior Derrick Drabble had to battle back Sunday after losing his first set against USF’s Einar Hart.

“It was tough at first with me concentrating and focusing [on] what I needed to do,” Drabble said. “I kinda gave away a lot of free points out there, but with [associate head coach Chris Russell’s] help, I started playing a lot tighter and went back to the game I was supposed to be playing. ... Going back to the basics helped me pull the match through.”

The UW women were equally successful this weekend, showing none of the usual first-match jitters in their 7-0 sweep of the Pilots.

“The girls stuck to their goals, played well and they were disciplined,” women’s coach Jill Hultquist said. “We won 7-0, but they were good ball strikers, and the girls really had to concentrate. They did what they were supposed to do.”

Newcomers Denise Dy, Samantha Smith and Lina Xu all played solidly in their first matches, each earning two-set lopsided victories. Overall, the team is much improved from last year.

“I definitely saw the progress,” Hultquist said.

“In the past we’ve had some tougher matches with Portland, but the girls were really focused and did what they needed to do. That’s what we need to do to break into the top 30.”

Even more exciting was the doubles play of Dy and Venise Chan. The pair, ranked No. 47 in the nation, ran through the Pilots team 8-0.

“It felt good because it’s our first home match and the first time partnering with Denise, although we played last fall,” Chan said. “It’s definitely a good start for our coming match.”
