The Huskies are back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. to host Seattle Pacific, Sacramento State and Stanford.
After defeating Alaska Anchorage in its season opener, the UW will be competing at home once more at Hec Edmundson Pavilion before traveling to Utah and California in the upcoming weeks.
Senior Ashley Houghting won two event titles in last week’s home opener, and four Huskies each added title wins.
While the Huskies showcased some very strong individual performances on the vault and beam, as a team they didn’t get off to a good start on the vault and bars. However, strong effort in the latter portion of the meet pushed the Huskies to an early win.
Among the efforts were those of Karen Cain and Hatsune Akaogi, who both looked impressive in their events.
“We really stepped it up and showed what we’re made of and performed pretty well as a team on the floor and beam,“ coach Joanne Bowers said.
Bowers said that she believes the team will make a huge improvement from the first to the second meet in terms of overall team performance.
Swimming
The Husky men and women both return to the pool Saturday to host their final home dual meet of the season against Minnesota.
The UW women are coming off a dual-meet win over Oregon State and are looking to improve to 10-3. Washington coach Whitney Hite said she was very pleased with her team’s domination through 11 of 14 races and feels confident in her team’s focus.
“They’re focused; they don’t care who they race against,” Hite said. “They’re not intimidated by anyone, and I think now people know when you swim against the University of Washington, you have to be pretty good to beat us.”
Five Huskies will be focusing on what will be their last home competition: Shandra Case, Marisa Chang, Liz Johnson, Genevieve Patterson and Lindsey Sharp.
Six UW men — Jon Banker, Evan Bernier, Yonatan Cohen, Anthony Falaniko, Niko Micin and Scott Spansail — will also swim in the dual meet.
The UW men were off for the past two weeks after their victory over Arizona State. The men dominated the competition, winning nine of 11 races, and are looking to continue their strong performances ßSaturday.
