The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 gives you exactly what you’d expect: teen angst, emotional girl moments, cute outfits, boy problems and blatant sentimentality. While clichéd, formulaic and predictable, this Sisterhood sequel is an undeniably great chick flick.
The plot — with its four different main characters each able to fit into the same miraculous “traveling pants” — allows the audience to travel along with the jeans. The story weaves together four plotlines, from New York City to Vermont, Turkey to the Greek Isles. Just like the varying locations, each girl offers something different: the sporty blonde knockout (Blake Lively), the cynical redhead city girl (Amber Tamblyn), the adorable brunette Greek (Alexis Bledel) and the spunky Latino actress (America Ferrera).
Like many popular TV dramas — think Gilmore Girls or the O.C. — The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is full of teen angst. The film manages to fit almost every young adult issue into the lives of its four leads, from a pregnancy scare to sneaky Mean Girls-styled sabotage.
While formulaic, The Sisterhood is a genuinely feel-good film, with likable characters and interesting scenarios. The main actresses are each strong in their craft, offering great bits of humor and emotion. The film pulls you into the lives of these four unique girls, without too much of the usual cringing associated with sappy romantic comedies. Despite the quality of the film, it is not completely devoid of overdramatic, cheesy moments (such as one girl bawling that her mother didn’t love her enough and another shouting tearfully about her ex-boyfriend).
Adapted from a popular book series by Ann Brashares, the film reeks of Hollywood interference. Many of the plot points deviate from the book, including predictable romantic additions. If you’re a fan of the book, the plot differences may annoy you, specifically the extra-syrupy happy ending. However, most girls won’t object to the new, hot and even British love interests.
With four barely connected plots, the film briskly jumps from one girl’s life to another, staying fast paced and never boring. Seeing the film is almost like watching multiple movies in one, though the characters are brought together for a few final scenes in Greece. The movie will leave you happy and thinking about your own friends and romances.
