Greek Week continued yesterday with both

philanthropic and recreational events. In addition to a community-wide blood drive and volleyball tournament, houses also gathered to compete in what has become a Greek Week tradition: the Gallon Challenge.

“We do the event because it’s a tradition and the Greek community loves it,” said Sean Kraut, Alpha Tau Omega president.

For at least the past six years, Alpha Tau Omega fraternity has hosted the gallon challenge, in which a representative from every fraternity and sorority attempts to down an entire gallon of milk in one hour.

The only rule is that after a contestant finishes, they must be able to keep the milk down for at least 10 minutes before vomiting, a requirement many contestants were not able to meet.

Before the end of the hour, at least seven different individuals were disqualified for vomiting despite their efforts to keep the milk down.

“It’s fun to watch, but only because I’m not in it,” said senior Ester Sihite as she laughed at the spectacle. “It’s definitely one of the highlights of Greek Week every year.”

One contestant went so far as to attempt to down the milk through a “milk bong,” a beer bong filled while milk. Sophomore Kenny Anderson chugged the milk through the bong with the crowd cheered him on, but moments later, he had the crowd scrambling to get away as he threw up into a strategically placed garbage can.

When asked why he went to such an extreme, Anderson’s response was, “I don’t really know, to be honest. You just got to frat out sometimes.”

The winner of the event, scoring the most points for his team, was freshman Skylar Johnson from Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. Johnson finished the gallon in less than 20 minutes.

“I feel pretty full, but I’m not as sick as I thought I’d be,” Johnson said.

Greek Week events continue throughout the week, and many students say the best is yet to come.

“I’m really looking forward to the belly flop competition,” said Sara Simmers, a sophomore of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

Aside from raising money for various local charities through fundraisers and other events, Greek Week also serves as a way to bring houses together that normally wouldn’t develop a relationship.

“It’s so great to get out here with all the other frats and sororities and just have fun,” Johnson said.

Sihite agreed. “As ridiculous as it seems sometimes, I’m really going to miss this after I graduate.”
